ya maestro needs to be set up properly to get low latency monitoring.

Logic's Main 1/2 output shows up on the 'Software Return" channel in Mixer 1 (top mixer). It's wired to go out of out 1-2 (that's what the dropdown below Software Return is set to) I also have a software return set to go out of 7-8 (mixer 2). I use a Y cable to send output 7-8 to the line input on my imac so any screen sharing I do via Google Hangouts has DAW audio. I use the DAW for handling any talkback mics for those Google Hangout sessions. In the Output Routing page, Mixer 1 is set to output to Line 1/2. Mixer 2 is set to output to Line 7/8.

So much for a simple example What do you run your headphones off of ? I good example of how flexible Maestro is ! Headphones should be hearing Mixer 1 (or whatever Mixer you're using). That way they'll get the direct/no latency signal of Maestro and as long as your "Software Return" is up they'll also get the mix from the DAW. Edit: I think? Going from memory and I'm new to Maestro but I think that's what you want if you're using the direct monitoring. Or if you can crank your buffer down to 64 or so you could just monitor out of the DAW and forget Maestro.

The output page is where you pick what the headphones get sent, Not the output routing page.

I just set my buffer at 64 in Logic and don't seem to have any problems with latency. Are there settings in Maestro that effect latency? Maybe I need to dive into the manual on this.

From Apogee CS: "To enable direct monitoring in Maestro you just need to make sure to click and place an "X" to align with your "Line 1-2" and "Mixer 1" in Maestro's "Output Routing" window." and you can also play with your buffer settings: with this a can talk along with click track perfectly well and could go lower buffer for less latency too.
