This is something I should have addressed years ago but no better time than the present, I suppose. I thought I remember a colleague of mine having an external HD that was set to periodically backup his OS, and his storage at certain intervals. I'm using Win 7 and about once a year I'll manually back everything up everything I care about onto a big HD. This is a disaster waiting to happen, and it does happen every few years. I need a better way. Is there some way to set up a drive that will kick on once a week or month and copy all the necessary bits? And, what kind of drive do you recommend.
If this seems ridiculously basic, then that's good news for me.

In the past it's been SSD tracking drive, auto backup to a pair of Big spinners then automatically at the end of the day to big spinners on my Google fiber and to the cloud ! RADAR V/24 means rethinking things !

I use chronosync daily. Been using it for 10 years and haven't found anything I like better.

Backblaze looks fairly amazing in that they will mail you a hard copy of your drive if need be. Wow!

+1 on Backblaze. One of the thing I like about it is that you can backup your OS and main drive... and the external drives as well.
Now, the recovery option is not instant as they will be sending you a drive with the whole shebang on it .. but as an off-site backup it very good value.
I also have Dropbox to sync all my project files ... but there is no versioning in either of those... so enter TimeMachine (I have a Mac) .. which would allow me to recover a deleted file, or step back to a previous version of a plugin installation if I had to ... I suppose there must be something like that in the Windows world?

Backblaze has a recovery option that involves downloading zip files. you can search for files, and they keep up to 30 days worth of changes to a file or something like that.

I am so deeply sorry for you. Get well soon. Lol. No love for Win7?? I think it's the best OS I've used. 10 is cluttered. Every Mac I've used has contributed to what I swear must be an ulcer (though some of that may be that every mac I've used was during a PT session).

I'm lazy about local HD backups too. Don't want to mess with that very often. But I do big ones, once in a while.
I have Box.com and Dropbox.com installed on my main PC, and my secondary PC.
All of my "important" files and folders are immediately backed up every day to those clouds.
Also, every time I turn on my secondary computer, those same files get populated to that machine as well, since I have the Box and Dropbox apps on there also. So now I have everything on a cloud, and two separate systems.
It's really easy and I don't have to think about it. Just turn on the second machine once in a while and let it run for a bit. It's also free.

I use a manual system.
I record to my audio drive.
I back up the folder by copying it to my system drive.
I run time machine on my computer
I back up across the network to Jo's computer in the house to a directory there, she time machines.
I have a portable drive... I back up to it.
Backups have to exist in two physical locations to be considered secure.... at least they did when I worked in the industry...8)
cheers
