I had to return the amphion one15 I have been demoing to Montreal, so took the opportunity to also visit Studio Economik, one of Canada's best gear stores. It is set up in an old studio and you can audition monitors in the double walled and sealed control room with of course professionally designed treatment etc..
Marc-Andre kindly sat me down in from the of the Neve and Avid consoles, set up the dangerous controller and set up you know $20 -$25,000 of monitiors and amp powered up said have fun and left me to my own devices
You may remember we had a thread about a year ago and we discussed a variety of higher end monitors most of which I have never heard.
So, today I auditioned the: ATC scm 20sl mkii ( active and passive with a Bryston amp), PSI A21m (active), and the PWC twotwo.6 active:
Of course, its ideal to have a quality controller so you can just switch between the monitors, level matched, on the same material.
I listened to the PSi and PWC first and then the ATC active and passive.
Its all subjective, I know, but I would have liked the pwc tweeter with the psi woofer but when I flipped on the atc active: it was all over
I thought the pwc tweeter clearer and more present than the psi and the psi woofer quicker and more accurate and focussed than the pwc ?
The atc (active) just seemed to step everything up a few notches, in particular I don't think I have ever heard a monitor do bass and kick any better and or, the word that came to mind was authoritatively. Although the atc active and passive share the same drivers, the passive through the bryston seemed more open in the mids and top but lacked the presence and authority on the bass that the active atc had .
Interesting to audition a front, a rear ported and a closed cabinet as well.
I believe it was ericn's positive comments about atc in the past that caused me to do some research and as I recall they are sort of in the neve school of engineering, meaning over engineered but for performance and so I guess they have a larger sweet spot ?
I wasn't quite believing their performance, so, of course, I picked the most aggressive song and cranked them, they sneered at me and laughed and said is that all you got ( you know, in a condescending British upper class kind of way) and just sounded greater.
I put my credit card tail between my legs and whimpered all the way home
