That's a steal! I had a red badge for years (and used them at MTSU before that). Loved it on female vox and upright bass. Enjoy!!! Stu I've heard killer upright bass stuff done with it. Jazz combo. Steinway D with red badges was also nice. I mic a Steinway D with a pair of Blue Balls and it sounds amazing. Lololol

I had one for a few years and unfortunately had to sell it because I was in a pinch. I think they are very flexible microphones, similar to a U89. I occasionally used them on vocals, really liked them on banjo. "If you have a dedicated banjo mic, you have too much money" - Fidel Castro I guess I had better do something about my dedicated accordion, harmonium, concertina and bagpipe microphone collections then.

I was able to snag her twin sister. They are sequential serial numbers in the 700s. Made in '84. Same age as I am.
We'll see what I can do with these.

Killer on grand piano, guitars, overheads, and sounds great on certain vocalists also. Beautiful high frequencies without harshness. Non sibilant.

Very uncolored and just plain nice sounding. I do children's music with a friend female vocalist with a lighter voice that would probably sound great on this mic. A nearby family member owns a vintage Knabe mini grand I would like to try then on as well.

That was one of the other places I really liked it...at the end of the grand with a pair of 414BULSs over the hammers. We also used it as a 3rd/center overhead on drums. Sounds killer. Did it pick up low end well? Highs nice and not painful? Sorry - thought I replied to this! Yes, very pleasant, balanced, and not harsh. If I remember right, I used them a few times on bass cab too.

I'm curious. Has anyone here put the TLM 170 next to a U89? How do they compare sonically? Which did you prefer and why? A pair of one of these is slowly creeping on to my "WANT" list.

I haven’t tried the u89 but I absolutely love the TLM170. I bought a brand new pair of 170’s at a killer price with the intent of selling them both for substantial profit. I made the mistake of pulling one out of the box to see what it sounded like. I was blown away. Needless to say, I kept both of them so I have a stereo pair. I certainly didn’t make any profit, except for the gain in sonic goodness with sounds in my studio, LOL. I absolutely love the way the 170 sounds. I think they would be extremely useful for the type of music you do my friend

Thanks drsax. jtc111 and I keep discussing the TLM170. I've debated getting the B3 Cap for my BLUE system, which is their take on the U89/TLM170 sound, but I won't drop $699 on it when if I play my cards right I can get a TLM170 or U89 on ebay or reverb for around $1500. If I found one for $300 I'd probably bite. lol.

The B11 is very U67ish and it my favorite cap these days. Unfortunately the original 8 are not on sale.

I figured you would be interested in those newly released ones though. I know you had a post a while back about them coming out. Very interested. I picked up the B11 right away upon its release since the description sounded like a 67. I used it to record an entire EP for a new musical, all voices. I bought the B10 afterward. I have my FleA 49 and still have my AA CM49, so there wasn’t a rush to get another 49 type in my studio. It was much more open than the FleA 49. More like the CM49, but even cleaner. So I returned it the same day it arrived after testing it. Better to put my money elsewhere and keep the CM49 which is multipattern. Pretty sure I posted clips on the BLUE Capsule thread. I don’t do a ton of pop or R&B, but I’d love to try out the B9 at some point. I do have one client that would probably sound great on it. Actually kind of debating the benefits of moving to the Big Bottle from the Bottle Rocket Stage II. I’d love to get one in my studio for a day to test the, next to each other.

170 is much cleaner than a U89. The U89 ive used was like a much smoother almost dark U87.
170 is a very clear microphone.

Vincent, you'll love the 89 or 170 on classical vox!!! I don't if I could use the words "cleaner" or "clearer" on either one but they share the same capsule & it's back to A/Bing which one you like with YOUR vox. One has the "iron" & the other one doesn't. Can't describe the tonal adjectives but you'd think one fits a vox better than the other & when you try them out it's a surprise. They are very similar & I would take either one WAY BEFORE an 87!

Good mic, but very different from the 170. The 170 is clean and clear as other cats here have mentioned... but... it’s not bright, it’s extremely smooth and pretty flattering and sounds very effortless.

Any further thoughts, regarding the TLM 193, compared to the TLM 170 (in cardiod)? Thanks, Chris

And by that I mean the 193 will be good on something's but terrible on others depending on the situation. The 170 will almost always sound good.
