I've finally got around to testing out my mic's and doing some test recordings. I promised a clip of the MTR microphone so did a very quick recording of my acoustic, my chain was Daking > WA2A (loving this compressor BTW) > MOTU1248 (also love this .. Apart from a bit o' compression, I added a limiter on to bring up the volume.. See what you think, you may be surprised (or not at all .. Remember this mic costs around $170.00 (ish)? P.S if the guitar sounds a little slinky, it's because I downtuned it.. I'm a metal head, that's what I do . https%3A//soundcloud.com/mixalliance/samsonmtr-guitarfade

Big sound, seems like it had real good range too. btw had to dig up SK-A on youtube and have a listen as you put it in my head again Yeah, I think it's an awesome sounding mic. It's super sensitive and sounds great as either a card or omni, in this track I stuck it in omni to pick up the room sound which I think kinda works.. But it takes EQ well, it's very clear / detailed and it never gets harsh it's defo on my favourites pile. I'll post some more complete tracks with less sloppy playing, I'd tested out like 20 mic's at the point .. Edit: I'll do some vocal testing next, I've already had a quick go with the Warbler MKID and Samson.. Personally I prefer the Samson over the MKID, it's a great mic don't get me wrong but you get far more clarity / depth with the Samson. Can't deny it also prefer to my Mojave MA-300..

Just to note I've just ordered (rented) a Vintage U67.. It's going to take a while to get it, they don't just hand these things out willy nilly.. But I'll add it to the comparison pile..
I'm waiting on an Epiphone acoustic with nylon's which is more of a regular acoustic, I'll record various options in various rooms. This one was quite a wet one, but in my home studio control room it's rather dry, then go through multi-options like omni / cardioid with HPF on / off.

I noticed on another site shadow you made mention of soundelux with this mic. is there a connection there? There is sir, but before making your mind up on it I want to string together a lot of recordings in various positions.. This was in quite a "verby" sort of room, which I think is cool but I expect people will want dry samples / cardioid samples / vocal samples (with a standard tuned guitar) etc. before they may write it off and / or pay no attention. I really just love to mess around though, tuning down guitars / using odd combinations / making new sounds.. But I suppose for a "mic test" it's probably best to have a starting point. I'll get it all together in my home studio, I think it sounds pretty good for a mic just plonked in the middle of someone's room though personally .. mrholmes Cool, just to note though this is the "expensive" and I use that term loosely of all the Samson Mic's it's the MTR 231 I believe? Which goes for around $170.00 - $200.00, I just bought it for the awesome mic stand / rocker but it came with a good mic too.. Who'd of thunk it?

Yup that's the one, it would of been too difficult to walk into the next room and read the label across the bottom of the mic.. So of course I guessed .

It's got a bite to it I think sounds pretty cool. Am wondering with snare? Yeah I think it could sound pretty good on a snare, it's main purpose in life is a vocal mic and it is one of the best vocal mic's I've heard. It has a perfect sheen / clarity to it and remains pretty fat but in a controllable way, plus it doesn't suffer much with proximity effect. I will say it's very sensitive, someone's alarm was going off down the street the other day and I could here it through headphones. There is some method in my madness, I do use LDC's combined with SM57's on guitar cabs for 7 / 8 string guitars. But I kinda get the feeling this mic might be a little too fat in those regards. Not that I won't try it of course, but the six string tuned down to A was a prime indicator.. So far I've tested it against an AKG D5 / SM58 / SM7B / Mojave FET / Warbler MK1 / Neumann TLM 67 / Neumann U87 (AI) and I want to test it against a vintage U67 at some point.

I've had the 231 since it first came out. Very powerful mic with a pleasing distortion. Ask audio has a review of the 201 where the reviewer claims the recordings he made with the 201 sounded extremely close to ones made with a U87. The freq response looks more like a 414 though.

The fun part about your accidental discovery is that the MTR series seems to be not too bad. Talked to friend about it, who is known to be a gear snob, but he owns two of the MTR 101 as well. He gave me one for checking. I like that they do not have a hyped top end. I also like that there is no muddy low end in close micing. Maybe they are not as detailed as any of my Nuemanns or Gefell etc... The dynamics sound a little compressed but that is not a bad thing because I am not the best vocalist in the world. But hey the MTR 101 is about 50-60 Euro in the EU. No risk no fun I had to order one in UK because in Germany they where sold out. PS: Was at the samson website because I wondered I cant order the whole line in the EU... Here is the risk part of the mic... The use of DEHP is also not aloud in the EU WARNING: This product contains DEHP, a chemical known to the State of California to cause birth defects and other reproductive harm.

You can get the MTR231 for £119.00 at music matters, there's quite a bit of difference in the range. The top o' the line one is a dual 1" gold spluttered diaphragm.. Go for gold.! Yeeah.! I am going to post clips, taking a while to get a song together.. I suppose I could just cover something for a vocal test.

After testing the 101 I ended buying a used 201 for 50 Euro. Working with it for a week and its true, it is a very good microphone.
Its more flat in the HF range, way more as my Gefell UMT 70. The transients are more round, and the sibilance is not that harsh.
If you find one used ... grab it by the ... body.
