finally I've got myself a mobile rig. this is not to make money or start up a business. it's to be able to record mates/friends/fun people in random places.
the setup is.
focusrite 18i8 with a surface pro 2 and a RMA dual beast via spdif for me to monitor. ie. 8 channels in and 2 channel out not including muso fold back which is via 2 stereo feeds to a Behringer ha8000 with 5 headphones.
so 4 pres onboard the focusrite + 3 channel lunchbox with 4x diy 500 series pres and 1 vocoloco plus a 500 series comp and 2x500 series eq
8 stands with minimal mic collection. some dynamics, condensers and a ribbon.
some pads, active di, passive di, 9v pedal power packs, ac boards, a table and a roll of gaff.
I can fit the entire setup in my back pack if I leave the table at home.
obviously I need a bigger 500 series rack but other than that.
what should I include.

Cool! I've been fantasizing of doing something very similar.
I actually bought an 18i8 a few months ago, but sold it to a friend. If I were going to take a serious swing at it again, I'd be looking at the Clarett 4Pre and a compatible computer.
You might want to add something like a Presonus DP88 or Focusrite Clarett OctoPre if you want to use the ADAT I/O.

how did you find the focusrite. I'm renting this one for 6 months then i'll ditch it. I needed usb so the clarett was not an option. otherwise that's what I would have tried.
I have a session in a weeks time where i'll track a full band then overdub vox and some strings. will see what happens.

They are just so easy to use, and they have all the right features. I recommend them to my friends. The sound quality was slightly on the low fidelity side, but just barely. Really good for the price. When I tried the Clarett, I was like, aha, here's that Focusrite all grown up with a bow tie on. Only makes me wonder how good the Red series could be.

so the little scarlett gen 2 is good to go, hooked up to a surface pro 2 and headphone amps.
out of interest I hired the scarlett for 6 months at approx $180 total. the unit is brand new and I am now a fully fledged registered focusrite member with access to all of their gear/plugs.
to buy the red plugs would have cost me around $350 on their own.
recording an entire band Saturday.

thought i'd report back on the scarlett.
first up. the sound quality is awesome. I am going to keep it that way by never doing an ab. "-) to be honest I don't want to think about it any more.
ease of use. that is top notch as well. it hasn't skipped a beat connected to a surface pro 2.
fold back and routing. it works with no issues. there are 3 sets of fold back options that can be accessed without any need for ninja skill routing.
latency. ok. this thing is a big piece of shite with regards to latency. not from a point of monitoring as that's very good. it's the automatic latency reporting when plugged into reaper. it's just not accurate enough. some overdubs are behind the click and others are in front of the click. it seems very random. I will need to override the auto control and set a specific sample amount.
I am starting to think the best option here is to test latency every session and adjust as part of my setup process. i'll start another thread on this.
