Hey just wondering if I am crazy. I have had an AT4060 Tube Cardioid mic now for quite a few years. I pull it out everytime i get a really nice LDC Vocal style mic to compare it to. I really like how I sound through the AT4060. I have had a few U87's from Vintage to AI models, U47 variants and some nice C12 clones and some other nice mics but everytime I hear the AT4060 through my voice it sort of makes me say - " Why am I not using this mic more??" and I end up selling the other mics as I think the AT4060 sound just as good if not better for me.
Have I just got a love affair with some idea of a sound that I think I like or really are there others who think the AT4060 holds its ground well?

I think that no matter what, someone's voice will sound best on a single mic out there. You can either luck into it like you have, or you can try/buy a bunch of different mics until you find it. Most people will never find a perfect mic for their voice, consider yourself lucky!

AT4060 is a great mic. I've used it on many things and never failed to impress me.

Very under rated, when it works it shines. At the time AT was looked at as what the Chinese mics are today, but the AT guys were ahead of the curve as far as assembly line and automation and proved you could build a great mic that way, in private I have heard Large European manufacturers admit AT taught them many lessons on how to build less expensive quality consist capsules.

I've had similar experiences with it beating out some other highly touted mics (87,251,47). Sometimes it just works! I wish we could just put mics up with generic bodies and no names attached to them. I think we would all be very surprised at which mics we chose.

AFAIK the 4060's were used on quite a few high profile pop songs, so they can't be all that bad right? You can still buy them and in terms of upper end mic's are relatively cheap. Agree with svart, if you have found something that works for you then you're lucky. Going through the mic selection process at the moment, it's not pleasent..

Anyway--the 4060 is a wonderfully natural mic, IME.
I DO think the idea of the "voice as snowflake" is myth invented by marketing depts to sell to home studios. The reason there were only a handful of vocal mics used for 50 years is because it's all that was needed--to record ANYONE....well enough to be on the radio. This idea that everyone has some perfect mic--it's not that there's not some truth to it, as someone who has been down that road...it's just that it really doesn't matter a lot. The difference in a standard mic--be that an LDD or a classic AKG/Neumann LDC--the difference in one of those and a certain voice's "perfect match" mic is TINY. Tangible. But, in the panned back sense tiny. It was a big budget deal where more than two mics were put up....maybe two LDCs and a LDD. Everyone listens....compresses....EQs....picks the best for the singer and goes. Once people started buying mics for a PROJECT studio--is when the snowflake bit came in....the hunt for that special something....that oh so flattering compliment to a single voice....
Been there. Done that. You can learn from my travels or ignore them. To the OP, the answer is clear--do it. I can tell you the vintage 87i will KILL on my voice over the 4060. But, that doesn't matter--if yours likes the 4060 better, you're done. Call it a day. Get a backup while they're still going for cheap. Send me the 87i. I'll put an Innertube mod in it and have MY snowflake "best match" mic for my own caterwauling.
