BTW, I've got a pair of low mileage AKG 414 EB's with brass capsules. What would be the highest and best use of those capsules and or mics? Probably just keep them stock.

666's rule. Watch out for 666-R's which have a pronounced low frequency roll-off.

This year I tried the 666, pl9, RE55, and a Mojave FET. None of them really kept my attention. I think my 666 was defective because the output was very low. As the year closes I currently have a Coles 4038 and 4035, a Royer and a few 57s. I sold off the sm7 last summer too because I wanted to try a condenser on vocals. As of now I still haven't replaced it. The WA87 looks cool though.
I also have a very old mic that was found in my grandfather's garage after he passed away. Its a tiny dynamic with a 1/4" plug on the end. It doesn't sound good but I'll always keep it. No one has a clue as to why he would have a microphone so its a mysterious thing.

I don't think a 666 should be significantly low. They mostly live on kick or bass amp here. Toms can be cool, guitar amp some. Don't think I've ever had one on voice as a keeper.

I have an earlier version of that mic and love it on make vocals and larger acoustic guitars. As far as mic graveyards go, I tend to sell anything that hasn't been used in a while. I get a guilty/nervous feeling if I find myself hoarding. It's caused me to sell a lot of guitars, mics, etc that I really liked. Can't play em all I guess.

The SM7B is a mic I miss a lot. I sold it mainly because of the form factor. It's not a good handheld mic, and I don't want a whole lot of mic stands around me while I'm working in my limited space. The M88TG and the various smaller Shure mics do better for me there. I do really miss how well that mic generally sounded, though. I wonder if the new KSM8 would be in any way a similar experience, but in a handheld package. Another one I look at is the Heil PR35. Mysteries for another day.

Original Brass Capsule EB's are selling for stupid money, so keep them stock, as much as I miss the one I had that had JW's special sauce. Or you can send them my way!

I think I just grew bored of the sm7. It worked but after awhile I found it to be a bit dull. I wanted to replace with a condenser in hopes of capturing more detail. Ironically a lot of the vocalists I was recording hit blocks around that same time and I haven't had to cut vocals for awhile. Im pretty close to pulling the trigger on the wa87 and see what it can do.

Blue Balls - Phantom powered dynamic. They sound like sweaty balls. CAD TSM411 - Got these as part of a drum mic kit when I was probably 14. Terrible sound. Unusable. EV 664a - Sits idle. Not enough time during tracking to really experiment with it. The 664 is actually a great mic - the granddad of the RE-20. Very neutral due to the lack of proximity effect (first ever variable D mic.) The original Buchanan Hammer, they actually guaranteed that you could drive nails with it without damage (except possibly to the nail.) Used to have an unconditional lifetime warranty but that was discontinued when the company got sold. One of my all time favorites for top of snare on punk and metal bands, as they sound decent and it doesn't matter how hard they whack it. I have an amusing story about when I used one on Lux Interior of The Cramps, who incorporated smashing 58s as an integral part of his act (his road manager stood stageside with a stack of 20s to pay for the broken mics.) They were doing 2 nights at the club and I was scheduled for the second. I caught him doing that on the first night and said "Not on my night he won't!" Made a cable out of brand new 8402 and put up the 664 with a quick release. Road manager comes up and says "You know you're going to need a backup mic." I grinned at him and said "No, I won't - but I'll put one up for you so you won't worry about it." Well, Lux put on one HELL of a show, trying to kill that mic and cable, couldn't do it, no matter what he tried. Got in a good "Told you so" to the road manager after the set, who was somewhat happy about being able to keep all his 20s. Stage had a few new dents in it. Mic was fine. Only real problem with the 664 is that some of them are so old that the diaphragm has dried out and got stiff which messes up the frequency response, especially the lows. Try it on snare top some time, especially if you've got a wild drummer.

Yes, keep them stock by all means. If my finances ever recover I might try and make you an offer for them. As I said before I have a C12A with the brass capsule.

I could be misremembering but IIRC it has an internal impedance selection feature. Could also be that the diaphragm has got hard. Could also be that the foam in front of the capsule has disintegrated and is pressing on the diaphragm.

I would also gladly trade your charming expertise for a C800g! I apologize to RGO and members of this thread for the OT: Here we go again: Context.... without it I feel you are disrespecting me/ taking a cheap shot at me. If you had added a smiley face or crying face I would have laughed because I would have known you are kidding or playing around. I have never disrespected you or your knowledge or " expertise ". I work my ass of to gain my knowledge, experience, and " expertise ". My original post was a joke, my expertise is worth way more than a mic and it's sad that you obviously don't think that. You should ask other members who ask me to review their material if they appreciate my " expertise ". I hope you have a great day, and I hope you post with more context considering you are a moderator.

Seriously, ChaseUTB, you didn't see that @smallbutfine's remark was a joke? I found it obvious and chuckled quite a bit over it actually!! There was once a person who claimed that typed words did not contain emotions, context or implied intent. What a fool.

johneppstein, surely you have an opinion about the best type of foam to reload an EV grille with? I tossed the disintegrating foam from my RE-16's, and re-lined with some open cell speaker grill foam I had laying about, but it can't be the best stuff for the job. They seemed darker up top than I recalled, last I tried them on voice.

Yes, ChaseUTB, it was a joke! A zinger for sure, but a joke nonetheless, I don't think anything was meant by it. Just a clever play on words is how I read it. Sort of reminded me of some classic comedy like Mel Brooks or something.

I see what set you up right now. Obviously i forgot to make it absolutely clear. I am sorry for that really. In no way my comment was made to insult you in any way. You made a joke and i reacted spontaneously with no other context as to make a double joke out of it - i did not even think of that this could be understood in any other way. Obviously my fault. Take my honest excuse for this. I will edit my post, so nobody else reading this thread might understand this wrong from now on.

Why i take this serious: This is actually a very friendly board with friendly and polite people striving for knowledge and expertise and i absolutely like it that way. But we can not assume everyone reading here gets this automatically. We all know, that there are other places for pro-audio guys, where i easily would take into consideration that this is intended in a mean or condescending undertone. And if anybody gets it wrong, in worst case somebody's reputation could be damaged. I want to make sure, that this kind of things is not happening here. And yes, this is on my turn especially because i am a moderator. The existance of this board actually has to do with forum moderators acting like self-centered little (insert word of your choice) with administrative power.

Hmmm, ya know I did need some foam for an RE-20, and Bosch just sent it to me. Maybe 8 years ago. No idea now. Word at the time was they wouldn't sell the stuff, or there was a crazy minimum order, or something

I got some RE-20 foam too, a few years back. I think I paid them some small amount for it.
