Has this been discussed 46 times already? For me it's PA bassdude, UA Marshall 2203 and S-Gear. Im checking out UA Fender.

When I want to add some bass distortion, I duplicate the bass track and use Slate's FG-73- technically a preamp- and crank it to add distortion.

When I am forced to use a sim I use Logic X's stock sims. They sound OK.

I stooped using them because they all miss one or another thing. They simulate a lot of things but they still have probs with amps?
I now use the HK Tubemeister 5 with the Red-Box which sounds fantastic and is not fake.
Other from that I also like to use the full-tone amp sim analog-pedals (each 30$) which is great for writing and sometimes tracking.

I just did a "current state of fake" cover tune....demo of WavesGTR at 88.2. Turned out fine, but I used the Heritage--short Gibson scale guitars do better with some, I think. Not gonna buy it cuz, why? I own amps--I was just proving a point to myself how well I could do in a "worst case" scenario of having my keyboard and computer.I had Sgear while I had the slate bundle. Nice. But, I Neve actually used it on tracks, so....that's really where what separates usable from not--sitting them into tracks....EQ'ing them....

I really like some of the Positive Grid Bias FX stuff. Their crunch stuff is the most convincing to me. Nothing wrong with Amplitube 4 either

Xpand2 in PT Guitar Rig 5 pro WavesGTR
Xpand2 ( though synth not sim ) sounds phenomenal to me. Vast potential, plus you can combine multiple cells to create unique sounds very quickly without a million parameters to alter.

Tried a lot of the software - Amplitude / Softube / TH2 / LePou, they all seem to lack something ( bit like when I used one of the first Marshall Valvestate's in the early 90's for a while)
Don't know if you'd include outboard amp sims here, love to try the Fractual stuff but the best part of $3000 is crazy.
Had a line 6 pod "as used on countless hits blah blah" and tbf it probably is better for that "pop" type sound.
I had a Behringer VAmp Pro (rack version) a while ago. For the "Meat and Potatoes" type rock sounds it was really good. ( lent it to someone, must get it back ) I don't think you can buy them now, but if you see one in a swag shop give it a try, you might be surprised ....
forgot to say - if you re-amp those software amp sims through a hardware tube pre, then add a tape sim to the track afterwards it does bring a bit more life to them ( only just started playing around with this but seems to work )

Other from that I also like to use the full-tone amp sim analog-pedals (each 30$) which is great for writing and sometimes tracking. I own that pedal in the video and the black one with the boost for metal. I've cut some mean tones with both. Its still real analog distortion, the American one works really well on keyboards. ITB amp sims, I used to use the Simulanalog stuff ALOT. But now I have a Fender Deluxe, Peavey tube guitar, 80s Peavey Bass Cabinet, modern Ampeg mini Head. Several guitars, several basses. Why simulate? I own a nice reamp setup when I get DI guitars or guitars that need more love. I can always go into a really clean power amp with a pedal or guitar preamp and get great results too. I learned alot about power amps with cabinets during my last year doing a side gig with a Grateful Dead tribute band. Lead guitar had an Alembic with a Macintosh monoblock solid state and a tube preamp. Thing weighed a ton but the TONE. Sometimes you have to understand that faster doesnt always mean digital. I think where the digital stuff rules is that you get all those different options in one device versus you get one or two sounds out of a really good amp and thats it. But its alot faster for me to grab the right guitar, fire up whichever pedal if at all is necessary and mic it up, ribbon, dyname, condenser etc...record it once and move on. Thanks -L.

Though I'm given to using real amps and the pain that goes with them, most of the times, I still can't get away from my old Marshall JMP1 preamp and Digidesign Eleven rack. The JMP1 is something that every guitar player should have, and every studio should consider. It just works and sounds right every single time... for all those sounds. One of the best things Marshall ever came up with.

I don't like Bias, S-Gear or Amplitube much. I still haven't found something that sounds good to my ears. S-Gear is also very buggy in Cubase.

Funny ... just on Monday I was asked again by a guitar student. A short level matched AB session sold one more peace-piece of real tube amplification.
Wake me up the day they got it right.

So - I bought another Kemper...and my God, it's just SO much better than anything else. I've tried (in vain) to not spend my money on it...but it is just on another level from everything else. The Version 5 with the new delays is just fantastic.

Seems like they're way out ahead of everyone else. I don't think I'll be able to settle for anything less.

The Version 5 with the new delays is just fantastic. Wait, you sold it and now you have a new one? I liked the Kemper too but as soon I ABed the Kemper to real tubes I was sold to the real AMP. I am happy with not having 100 amp sounds because I am one of those ADD people, keep too many options away from me. I have three amps three flavors...and a few pedals. Overall I am covered with tones by Fender Marshall and VOX - that is all I need...

I use them rarely, but find Logic's Fender's as good as the next.

Granted, it's only one amp model versus the multitude available with the Kemper, but you apparently have way more experience comparing amp Sims than do I. I'm just curious about your opinion of the UAD Fender versus the rest.

I'm not JK, obviously, but I happened to demo the UAD Deluxe a day after I returned that exact Fender Deluxe after renting it for a week for some re-amping. It's not close, in my opinion. It has the same hazy, mp3-compression-sounding glaze over the harmonic goo that every other amp sim I've tried has. It just literally makes me cringe when I play through them. Not trying to sound snobby, just one longtime player's take.

I've only ever intended to use it as a sim for tracking so I guess it only needs to be passable enough to do that... And I'm a long time guitar player so I totally understand where you're coming from.

I have tried the UAD Fender Deluxe a couple times. I actually thought it was pretty dang good. But that deluxe sounds more like a tiny Champ to my ears. Not a whole lot of usefulness in that sound to me. I really like the Friedman amps - that DS40 sounds great to me. But I can't record in stereo with stereo effects. Here's the bottom line. If I could use Amplitube with zero latency, I could probably be happy. If I could afford three classic real amps and had the ability to crank them wide open mic at midnight, I might be happy. But I don't, and the Kemper is just SO easy.
