It seems like my initial shootout was too much for most of you guys to handle, so here's an abridged version. These are SSL Style ONLY. 2 Hardware, 2 software. Alphabetically, they are... Cytomic The Glue Regular John Recording Sick Sick Sick Slate FG-Grey Stam SA-4000 Here are the files... drive.google.com/drive/folders/0Bym1m85ha75RUktweHdHNlp2TmM?usp=sharingThe results are on page 3 of this thread. If you haven't listened and don't want it spoiled, don't read past page 2.

I worked on an SSL 4000G desk for years and later had an SSL stereo compressor on my mix buss at home. I was shocked the first time I substituted it with another compressor. I had an SPL Dynamaxx laying around that I had become very fond of for snare drum and wanted to hear what it sounded like on the mix buss. The Dynamaxx sounded so much more musical and filled out the speakers so much better that I immediately sold the SSL.

My order: Z,W,X,Y
Z seems left weighted compared to all the other tracks - (everything shifts to the left and the lead guitar on that side seems louder), but overall there's just more clarity and transparency, which I prefer on this track. It just feels like more of the transients are making it through.
W and X are glued nicely and I might prefer either of them if I was trying to soften things ..but not on this recording.
I didn't really like Y - it sounded muffled in comparison. Lower mids are too pinched?

Had to check TTDR meter to see if I was imagining things:
DR - Z 21.04 L - 20.81 R Peak -4.26 L -5.22 R
DR - W 20.40 L - 20.89 R Peak -5.06 L -5.26 R
DR - X 19.98 L - 20.61 R Peak -5.47 L -5.23 R
DR - Y 20.22 L - 20.32 R Peak -5.16 L -5.50 R

I always had the impression that my SSL works best with Rock Music... for the rest I don't use it anymore

I'm commenting now so I can remember to come back to this when I'm in front of my monitors.
Thanks for putting this together!

Like everything on the SSL, I think most fell for the convienenace and recall rather than the sound, after using and adjusting to the sonics they needed it to do what they do. Add in the affordability of the DIY versions and you have a Studio standard.

It's kind of splitting hairs, but I think I liked 'X' the best on this. The bass / kick seem a little tighter and the vocal retains a tad more brightness. It may just be less compressed than the others.
I also noticed the left weighting on 'Z', and 'Y' seems too dark and mushy for this song. 'W' is fine and pretty close to 'X.'
Since they sound the most similar, I'll guess that 'X' and 'W' are plugins. Since 'Y' is seemingly the most colored, I'll guess that's the Regular John , leaving 'Z' as the Stam, which makes sense bc I don't think it has the turbo mod, and that may cause the odd stereo image.

I'm going with "W". My guess is W and Z are the real deal and the other two are plugins.
At this point if I've picked a Slate plugin I might just vomit ......

I will listen to these over the weekend, I have an RJR compressor, those plugins so I might be able to pick out a couple things. I've always heard the RJR being a little cleaner and less grainy than the others mentioned which is why I've always stuck with it on my main 2bus

I am actually in the market for a nice rock buss compressor, I am leaning towards an Alan Smart C2. Does anyone have any suggestions on pieces I can check out and demo in this style?

Can you please wait a day to post the answers I'm trying to finish Wiz mix now and want to participate... I really did not have enough time to go back thru the other large pool of files and choose / narrow down the comp names for each clip. I will when I get some time, however I will do this threads' files before the big thread Thanks again for taking the time to do this and help
