What do you mean by this? Can you add a few extra descriptors?
Are we talking extra harmonic content or frequency shaping?

Can you elaborate on this, I've been looking at this for sometime but haven't found any user reviews thanks

The Mercury V72s is pretty thick in a good way. The Mercury V76m is big (but not as thick as the V72 in the low mids) but seems to soften transients just nicely which can make a bright mic less edgy and sweeter. For instance the upper mid presence peak in a 47 which sometimes makes the 47 not such a great mic for female vox is much less of an issue with the V76m than most other 'go to' pres. The Sebatron Axis is very clean for a tube pre but gradually becomes more tube like when cranking the input harder though it never gets as thick as a V72. We also have a UA 610 MKII but that's just kind of woolly/muddy IMO. Also the SCA N72 with the input impedance set to 300 ohms darkens/thickens things up somewhat.

Groove Tubes The Brick is pretty thick. Gotta be a good 5 1/2" - 6".
Heavy too.

Depends on who the songwriter is haha
Biggest I've heard are the V76 (original) for a tube, and for a non tube would be a germanium Neve 1053
The Lola pres are pretty big sounding. Slower on transients than most modern pres.

Not cracking wise, but get a U67, and they're all big. Randy would probably have better suggestions.
I haven't tried enough to speak with authority, but so far "big" = SSL boards preamps, "thick" = vintage Neve or UA 610, "big and thick" = Great River MP-2NV.

Can you elaborate on this, I've been looking at this for sometime but haven't found any user reviews thanks I don't have one, as far as I can tell it adds harmonic distortion while keeping your signal automatically level matched. Seems like it would be useful.

Great River.
I dunno what he did, because I found it contrary to reports MORE colored than Neve "clone" preamps...but, for lead vocals and bassDI, that color is because it's UUUUUge. Voice of God huge. Had I been able to afford the rest of the circuit (the matching EQ) I'd have kept it. Alone, it was just too big for the also darkish mics I owned at that point. Dan's personal reference mics are a pair of U95 mics---the early runs that were really very C12'y....6072 and all....I owned one for a while--but, mine was never as sweet as Blackbird's really early serials....YMMV.

Ampex 350 or a Gates from the same era.

Vocal wise, it's the V72 . . . and why I don't currently own one is just as stunned as why John doesn't own a Sta-Level.

Comparing the V-72's I have (best ones I've ever heard and I'm damn lucky) to an Ampex 350, The 72 has lots more detail and harmonic above 6K, whereas the Gates and Ampex pres I have are way darker and more round and chocolate sounding by comparison. I will also get that thick sounding color by using my RCA 86a in preamp mode only, as it has gain for days on the input stage.

I usually just turn up the gain and add more attenuation to the output on my CAPI pres.. Definitely starts adding wool to the sound.

It's all so subjective - Popman I've got the Great River and EQ which is a very nice combo as well as a BAE 1073 MP and for mine the BAE is bigger. (If i go back into the studio and compare today i'll probably think differently L.O.L ! )
No experience but wondering about the DW Fearn, John

Pre-1956 Collins or Gates or pre-1952 RCA, lots of models that have it.

Probably the darkest/slowest/spongiest commercial you can get it online at any time preamps that doesn't cost that much is a Vintech Dual 72. I have a Mercury M72 and while it has a lot of low frequency harmonics or something going on, I don't think it's "dark". Still plenty going on up top. That ones not cheap (although used you can find them at a reasonable price)

Of the ones I have owned, I thought the Telefunken V672 was pretty awesome, thick and harmonically rich - I had it the same time as my V72's and 1066's and thought it was the most dense. Loved it on electric guitar with the humble 57 and actually really liked it on vocals, used mostly with an 87 or 48.
Significantly less expensive, or at least it was back in 2010. I think I picked up two channels racked for $900 on the GS board.
