I find it useful to ask the band to send me a you-tube video of whatever they want to be compared to...I personally have no "reference" for when I work. The reference I find most useful is my internal barometer of quality >internal barometer of quality Adam, you've got to make a plugin of that.. : ) Brainworks put a diode-helmet on me, but couldn’t figure out how to make it AAX compatible

Here's the collected collaborative list slightly updated, I'd appreciate new additions:

Awesome thread. Here are a bunch of my "newer" references/stuff I jam constantly (mostly pop/indie, some probably NSFW):

This is up for a Grammy for best engineering(whole album). The arrangement is great but my favorite is the space and the sounds happening with the reverbs and how they use them.

Most of the modern stuff gets a certain perspective, but I need like 5 others to get a different angle. Bruno Mars hit Uptown seems to thread the needle of sub to highs really nicely.
The attached video isn’t modern but it’s a good reference when you can’t decide whether a dB here or there will be “just right”

For volume, size, bass level, stereo separation, and overall balance, Ryan Adam's "Two" from Easy Tiger. Huge fan of that track and agree totally. Wonderful recording. I was rocking the shit out of that on the way to pickup breakfast tacos for the fam last Sunday. That track works great with alert hangovers where your senses are heightened.

Jesus H, it won't publish your quote. I'm doing something wrong. You said: "Any other modern reference tracks you guys are digging?" There are a few in here:

Any other modern reference tracks you guys are digging? I'm LOVING this Bruno track. The bottom is so legit. Vocals and BGV's are great. Really everything. I'd love to hear some more modern rock type stuff for reference tracks. I'm quoting my own post because I wanted to make sure it was in the list. Man, I love this mix.

Modern rock stuff, check this out. I think this track is amazing and it's done by Eric Valentine, performed mostly live with the band and his wife Grace Potter Also up for a grammy this year.

Couldn't find this thread so I started a dupe... copying my post from there and adding it here. Let's revisit this, it's been a year!
So here are my five that I always use to check a few things. I use tons of other references on a song by song basis, but this is the quintet that always makes a showing. It's also what I use to test new speakers.
Dear Catastrophe Waitress - Belle And Sebastian album of the same name - (overall balance for a busy mix)
La Cienega Just Smiled - Ryan Adams - Gold (if the bass guitar is lower than this it's usually too low)
Jesus Etc - Wilco - Yankee Hotel Foxtrot (if the low end is any heavier than this it's too muddy)
Answering Bell - Ryan Adams - Gold (if the kick is louder than this, it's probably too loud... also to remind myself of what a natural snare sound is)
I Want You Back - Jackson 5 - Diana Ross Presents The Jackson 5 (just overall awesome, so if I'm making anything this awesome I'm good... but also my reference for up front bass tone)

And after reading this whole thread, I may replace "Answering Bell" with "Two". Man that is a great sounding mix. Also, the Bruno Mars stuff is so good it's depressing.

Always reference this one for everything:
The Snails, "Green Piss"
If it sounds as bad as you think it does, you're not drunk enough and you haven't lost your mind yet.

Though neither are from the last ten years, I usually use:
“The end of the road” by Neurosis (specifically the last two min) as a dark reference and “here come the Rome plows” by drive like Jehu as a bright reference. If my mix is somewhere between the two of them, I feel like I’m right on the money.

Virtually anything from the Silk Sonic album, I.e., Bruno Mars again, but this time with Philly soul style orchestration.

nobtwiddler produced this one: Immolation’s Close to a World Below. I’m always in awe at how good it sounds despite being loud death metal.
