This is a GREAT thread. Thanks, Jesse! Georgia Why - John Mayer, Starting Something - Michael Jackson Last Plane Out - Toy Matinee Cream - Prince Milk Cow Blues - Eric Clapton Not modern, but once I have listened to these five, I know where I am. The list of references from other RGO members is priceless. Thanks to you all for contributing!

The list of references from other RGO members is priceless. Thanks to you all for contributing! The Toy Matinee record is one of the best sounding pop records ever made, IMO. Killer drum sound and amazing bass playing (Guy Pratt,) in addition to all its other attributes.

This is a great thread. So many good things were posted I might not have heard otherwise.
In my Alt. Country style, this is my general reference when I want to compare volume, width and also to check a piano that's big yet blends perfectly. Also the vocal's a little gritty, which helps me be a little less critical of the grit in my voice.

Ryan Hewitt's work for The Avett Brothers is just spectacular I think. Check out "Morning Song".

Yes, the bluegrass punk garageband stuff pre-2008. Also the demos on the expanded packages since 2009. Rubin insisted the I&L&Y demos couldn't be remixed, which I'll never be happy about. The others got at least a 10 minute remix....if i get work from it it's always The Gleam EP's. I like my demo version of Every Morning Song much better! : ) Live vocal from piano, actually sounds like them, the record does not sound like them.

Any other modern reference tracks you guys are digging? I'm LOVING this Bruno track. The bottom is so legit. Vocals and BGV's are great. Really everything.
I'd love to hear some more modern rock type stuff for reference tracks.

I'd love to hear some more modern rock type stuff for reference tracks. My buddy mixed the Sempiternal record by Bring Me The Horizon. He’s constantly getting asked to make songs sound like that. Not sure if that’s what you mean by modern rock. Not my thing.

That does sound really good, but then there's only two instruments.

As much as I don’t like the song, I reference Daughtry’s “It’s not over” for modern rock mixes. I’ll reference Chevelle’s “La Gargola” album quite a bit too.

I think Collin Dupuis killed it on the new Rayland Baxter record. That’s on of the few records that a song comes on the radio I go “damn, that sounds great”

Nice Thread!
I hope people check out these tunes people at talking about on something other than Youtube but its easy to share to get us hooked!
So for modern pop/rock/slow jams Im digging these two John Mayer tracks.
The vocal delays/reverb/stacking is great. And the groove is simple and addictive.
And this one is just my standard to be like....keep is simple dumby, simple is good. Seriously this track is so good.
I love how both tracks don't have a lot of drum cymbals if at all. Something about that is just so refreshing.
For Pop stuff:
Manny freakin killed this mix, cool depth
For banging Pop, also Bruno
Pop vocal stuff, this is about as recent as it gets! But very cool, P!nk kills it and some crazy layers and effects
Rap for most modern sound, Logic and Eminem
Modern Classic rock tune, Greta Van Fleet of course
Rock, Royal Blood, so damn good. Only two people, bass/vocal and drums. Tracked mostly all live.
Prog Rock, A Perfect Circle
CHill music/funk
Electronic/Alt/Pop. Glass animals. HIGHLY recommend this full album, inspired by Pink Floyd's Darkside its a gapless project that you can really get lost in.
Hip Hop, Gorillaz Demon Days is my go too.
Electronic Pop
Not sure what this is...pop, singersong writer soul???
And just awesomeness, Daft Punks Game of Love. Killer album, killer mix. Killer tune.
And finally, Jazz and just overall awesomeness done by the great Al Schmitt. Chris Botti's What's New. THIS is what Capitols Chambers sound like.
Whew, thats a lot...i'll be done for now...ha

I find it useful to ask the band to send me a you-tube video of whatever they want to be compared to...I personally have no "reference" for when I work. The reference I find most useful is my internal barometer of quality

Any other modern reference tracks you guys are digging? I'm LOVING this Bruno track. The bottom is so legit. Vocals and BGV's are great. Really everything. I'd love to hear some more modern rock type stuff for reference tracks. Been going over this thread again I missed some of it the first time, digging some of the tracks listed, for sound and song. "Still Feel Like Your Man," "Sailing to Philadelphia," "The Cowboy In Me," to pick three. But Bruno Mars, "Chunky." You know what this has that most other modern, slammin' tracks don't? IMO, you CANNOT play this track too loud. You can turn it up 'till it hurts, but it never starts sounding bad. Most other mixes, even hits, you'll hit a volume point where something sticks out, doesn't sound sweet all of a sudden. This cut, the frequency elements are fully contained in a throbbing bubble that gets louder with watts but never obnoxious. Even the pointed percussive elements which by all rights should bother you at some volume (remember the ice-pick side stick popular a few years ago?) doesn't. The track throbs as one huge groove. And the vocals and bass just are perfect. This is a significantly better mix than "Uptown Funk" to my ear. This kind of mix is what I most admire and aspire to, regardless of genre.

Glad I could turn you on to something donr ! Thanks Jesse. Just sounds great. Lyric is weak tho, It won't be in heavy rotation unless I want to hear great production. Shouldn't the goal of a release be, sounds great no matter how loud/soft it is or how loud you can play it back? I thought the Mutt Lange/Mike Shipley Shania Twain records sounded like that. "I'm Gonna Getcha Good" for instance. Either version (Red or Green.) Not to mention Def Leppard's "Photograph."
