I have not found one plug that does not have a plastic flat lifeless thing going on. What BRAND of plugins come closest to that open, exciting, electric sizzle and energy that to me only analog hardware adds.

Its maybe not fair becasue I have not used all plug ins.
The Kush Audio thing seems to close a gap to my ears. And some of the newest UAD stuff too.
If I switch between my hybrid mixes and my ITB ones I most often like the hybrid ones better. The answer to this is that the console and the outboard was used.
In most cases the OTB thing still makes sense. I am sure it wont take long that it makes no diffrence at all. But if they let out the cat too early they cant sell us the same shit 5 times.
A nice hybrid setup is the way to go. I am happy with it ... and I like it.

I really think you'd have to make that call yourself...it's all so subjective - and nothing more subjective in my opinion than EQ. That being said, I really like the Harrison EQ from UAD. I personally love the FF Pro-Q2, but there's another thread here with someone saying it's mushy. So your mileage might vary.

I demo'd Pro-Q. I was looking for a GML clean eq as I have lots of Neve outboard eq's for color. I tried the FabFilter Pro-Q2 against the AirEQ and the EQuilibrium. I kinda liked the EQuilibrium the most. The AirEQ had a bright tinny thin thing going on 90% of the time. The FF Pro-Q2 was dirtier then the EQuilibrium but the EQuilibirum as clear clean and wide as it is still sounds like a flat (plastic) plug. I still , haven't found, what I'm looking for...

The TDR Nova is pretty nice if you turn the dynamics off it a good straight forward eq and it's free Paid for version has more bands Don't know if it's what your looking for but again turn off the dynamics and good eq pretty nice with the dynamics also jmo

It's hard for me to tell you if UAD is the way for you, however, if it was not included in my Apollo, I don't 100% know if I would invest into UAD platform. Recently, the plugs are dsp hogs, they sell an 8p and advertise tracking drums through Unison 1073's, however what they don't tell you is you have to make a few workarounds to make that happen, i.e. Load lock and turning off the parts of the plugs you are not using ( I need to research further but have not seen someone post a vid where it's possible). With a quad, and without other plugs ( Waves, SKnote, FF, Softube, stock ) I would not be able to finish a mix without real workarounds. Prints, committing to tracks, freezing, extra grouping, and routing to save dsp are some of the few. I will probably get flamed for this but this is my opinion, even on sale with the $25 UAD plugs are still pricey, when native plugs are always on sale via various web stores. The sound quality is great, however other companies make great plugs as well. UAD also adds to render and bounce times, plus the satellites add a certain amount of latency that's always present. I could purchase 2-3:1 native plugs bs UAD for the same amount of money. I really like UAD, I really do, however if the dsp wasn't in my Apollo, I wouldn't probably invest into the plugin platform. Hope my experience and opinion helps you

Pro Q2 in Linear mode. Or Flux Eprue.
Almost any plug that is a emulation has that lame thick sound and fake plastic top. So, I agree with you.

I can offer a suggestion: Avoid the SSL plugin EQs and channel strips. The Waves API EQs are really good. The 560 is particularly useful. The 550 a and b can be surgically effective at times.

There are a few but some of the newer Softube stuff has really been surprising me. I do like the UAD stuff also and there is some overlap. Nebula might be the most realistic but it's so wonky with latency and has weird graphic interfaces. For FX I would have to go with Soundtoys and maybe Valhalla and Eventide.
I have too many plugins, haha. I'm one of those weird ITB guys even though I have a lot of hardware. I just like the workflow.

No one seems to ever complain about the hardware. Must be a reason?

"Plastic" is the exact word that comes to my mind every time I pull up Air EQ. On an unrealted topic, I'm selling my Air EQ license at full price!
