It's not blacknwhite, I don't generally comment on shootouts because A. there usually done poorly imo, and B. I like to get things in my own hands to make judgements on them, with my OWN base as a benchmark reference. Joly has samples #1, #2, #3 side by side, I hate the fact that he imbedded them with casio techno pop, compression and reverb, as a distraction from pure mic tone, but there it is..., plus, like i said(and ward missed), I have a GT2B (the joly 47 body by a different name), with an actual legitimate circuit clone U47 (MK#47) in it, with a spec BV8 tranny, and blueline M7 cap in it, again, from personal experience, it doesn't sound like a U47, it just doesn't, but it sounds good, and for sure much better than that congested Joly sample #3, even against his own sample #2, which does have characteristics of the 47, AFAIK Joly puts in his chinese MJ47 capsule, and pulls out an inner layer of headbasket, then swaps some electronics... maybe, from direct experience, it ain't gonna get you a U47, and neither will anyone else, I could give a ratz ass what anyone does to it, you cannot to turn a GT2B bodied mic into a U47 for any amount of $, let alone $300! seriously, it's a pipe dream, dudes need to stop talking, and start listening, i have a host of real and clone U47's at my disposal, anyone who wants to come over to put their Joly 47 to the test against these is totally welcome to do so, infact PLEASE DO! I love doing that kinda sheet! BTW, i'm sure Shann would attest to the fact that he can only do so much to a sub par design..., the CV-4 does indeed take a huge jump in Quality when he's done with it, but that is also a $1,400 mic, not a $200 GT2B. Just semantics here, but, isn't the MK47 actually different from a real U47? Doesn't this kit use 2 tubes to emulate the real deal? The samples that I've heard are really nice, but to call it "an actual legitimate circuit clone U47" seems like a stretch. All this said, I haven't listened to the Joly samples, but highly doubt that this $300 mic or whatever will be close to the real deal in your own space, side to side. I rest my case, the "circuit" is 100% identical, but I probably should have said "as close as it gets", the diffs are, the MK#47 has a 4 chamber BV8 tranny, and parallel tubes, the MK U47 has an 8 chamber BV8 tranny, and parallel 408A tubes, the original has 8 chamber tranny and a VF14, the circuit is literally identical, it's just that the original parts are dear at best, or not available at all. That said, i've swapped/tested many parts alternatives, not always, but sometimes you can hear as little as a single different resistor in change in a simple circuit such as a microphone, Jim Williams with tell you that since he designs most capacitors out of his audio paths, that the resistors make the sound, and they do NOT all sound the same, this has been proven true through my own experiences.

I'm also going to finish up a few things that are troubling me, i'm having absolute fits with Brad Mcgowens MK47, i finally broke down and ordered another PS tranny, i've had his mic embarrassingly/ ross martin levels of too long, he's been totally cool with me about it, sorry B... 8(
When thats off my plate, i will do some pretty crazy stuff with the pair of MKU47s that i have, it will be really great to have one of them as the mic in kit form, to be used as a baseline comparison against the series of mods i will try on the second mic, i will even use the same capsule and tubes in each mic, it should prove pretty interesting!

i'm not tearing anyone down, i'm keeping it real, I build and compare many mics on my own, we have mutual friends that do the same, they and I scrutinize the shit out of everything to the point of a possibly unhealthy obsession haha, That's where we're different Tony. I use mics to make music. I don't build em, I don't over analyze em, and I don't over obsess - I choose one, rely on my choice and get back to making music. That's all I care about. If a mic is up, I'm ready to record, it sounds decent - I'm NOT going to put up 4 or 5 others to find the "best" one. I'm here to make music, not mic choices. Obsession over a couple of percentage points on microphones is a time wasting (for me) lesson in foolishness. I can't make a living at music (which I do) by fretting over mics. For some, that's a fine hobby, but I'd much rather have music I've finished and making me money than a recording with a mic that only I would perceive as a couple of percentage points better. For night and day differences, there's a LOT of gear - including one that I designed with Brad - that make a HUGE difference in the end result. Much more than the difference between a couple of equally good mics.

We all 'obsess' about different things and of course we end up with different results. For those of us who try to do it all, I'm often concerned that one of those obsessions can actually be about the priorities themselves. There's nothing worse than getting into a circular argument with yourself.

Even with my very limited knowledge of electronics and mic design, I'm beginning to suspect gain is one of the most important things, often overlooked, and a big factor in choosing a mic, assuming it's not excessively noisy.
I've run through six high end mics the last couple of months, looking for the holy grail, and the ones with the highest gain also happened to be the best sounding. There may or may not be a relationship, but there it is.

How much do you want for your not working mix sozo? Let me know. I bought this Mike to have it a U47 flavor... I knew it wasn't exactly correct but it sounded pretty good from the clips and different than my solid state U87. I wasn't really looking to sell it but I don't want to put any more into it. I would entertain something fair for both parties... I'm not sure it' "not working" but it may need a tube possibly...

It's been pointed out to me that my use of the word "hobbyist" could be seen by some as "me looking down my nose at someone who doesn't make a living doing music". If anyone took it that way - my sincerest apologies. It wasn't meant as a put down, just an observation. I tend to just call it like I see it - and it sometimes gets me in trouble. :-)
In many ways, the joy of doing music and / or audio SOLELY for the purpose of enjoyment and fun is music in the purest sense of the word. If you have a solid job that brings home the bacon, and enough time to do your music, you are blessed. In the surfing world, there's always tension between those surfing professionally and those who are called "soul surfers" who do it for the pure love of it. Both are awesome ways to enjoy the sport IMO. Same with music. <<thumbsup>>
Now, for sozocaps - get that mic back to Joly and have him fix it for you before you give up on it.

I was a College professor of recording arts, my classroom was a 10 million dollar studio. Etc, Etc. Opened my studio in 1976, of which I still own, engineering and producing records. I no longer have to "do music for a living" Been there, done that. Now I just do it for fun. I guess I'd be called a Professional-Hobbist. Back to the titled subject.

I have not owned a real tube neumann but I am getting an excessive noise floor on this mic. Sounds good but noise floor seems to be a little bit difficult when I start processing the vox track. My Neumann u87 is dead silent and seems to have much more gain so I do not have to crank up the preamp gain so much. Are tube mic's much noisier then solid state ? My U47 clone has a self/ambient noise floor around -85db according to my converters.

I've done that before (called someone a hobbyist) and they got all hacked off about it. I don't think it's so much of an actual "looking down the nose" situation as it is mostly someone who takes it poorly is just really, really insecure. Unfortunately, that's the name of the game these days with so many folks jumping into the recording ring.
