Obviously, I don't have the ears you guys have; I had to listen many times to start hearing any differences, and I have to admit it came down to color more than the quality of compression. Anyway, I think the WA-2A is no slouch. Of the other three I think it's the closest to the 1176 - maybe a tad less transparent??

I think the WA-2a version has more heft and weight. It makes her vocal appear more forward and powerful. I'd use that.

It's all subjective and needs music around it to see what works best.

Great post sozocaps, thanks!
I agree with Randge, it is track dependent, they're all viable. That said, I absolutely prefered the WA-2A. It added just the right amount of special sauce. The vocal didn't sound so much different, just better. It was a more exciting vocal sound, and the lyrics came to you with feeling.

I like the 1176,.. which one is it? cheers Wiz It's a heavily modified Hairball I made... It came out great and it keeps seeming to be pretty transparent on this female vox I think.

Changed all critical coupling caps with good sounding ones, removed all electrolytic caps from the signal path, descrete signal cables to and from the gain knob ( not shared cable) ...

listen to the first word "if", the blue 1176 is buttery and smooth= the steadiest of the three by a long shot, i'd like a longer sample with some space to hear some attack and release character, my bet is it would seriously outshine the other 2 on more rhythmic material, especially slammed.

Or better yet.... Vox > WA-2A > 1176 Blue - done... ! but would you track that way ?

Or better yet.... Vox > WA-2A > 1176 Blue - done... ! but would you track that way ? Vocal mic - 1073 - LA2a (or CL1b) - 1176 blue. I track like this all the time. Last week I missed things up by removing the LA2a. I'll never make that mistake again. The gloss was gone. And after the fact, I can't get it back.

Pre-amp aside, isn't this basically one of the arguments for tracking clean? You can always add the 2A and 76 to the track later - not to mention be able to tweak or even change things up as the mix progresses.

Yes, it is one of the arguments... but not the one I'm presenting.
From my point of view and experience, nothing gives you the same finished vocal sound as printing a vocal with the right microphone properly gain staged preamp, then backed off a little to account for the boost from an LA2a which is just slightly brushing the vocal, adding 'the gloss' and then an 1176 blue stripe for peak handling. It's just a thing of beauty when it's done right.
Sidenote 1: lots of LA2a's are tweaked so that they don't provide a boost Sidenote 2: lots of LA2a's are modded to accept either a +4 or (switchable) +10 dBU input load to prevent overloading.

You also don't have to send anything back out after the fact, add an extra trip of ad/da (if you're on a daw, but who isn't these days?), you look cool to your clients when you tell them their vocal chain, going in, is the cost of a midsized sedan...

You could do that or you might wish to consider trying other microphones if that is consistently a problem for you.
