I received my M80 last night.. I don't normally buy mics without recognizing a need for a specific mic, but with all the raving love for the M80, I thought I'd give it a shot when I found a "cheap" one on fleabay.
I think I'll do a shootout and post the clips here for judgement.
The contenders will be:
M80 I5 SM57 SM7A Unidyne III/545 ATM63 D1 M201
I'll withhold my own judgement for now, but I will say that I have tested all of these mics in the list and most of these mics have a similar overall tonality with varying degrees of extended highs and lows.
If I can post this stuff this week I will, but I need to go on a sudden business trip next week, so it might be 2 weeks before I can update..

I'll also say that I've tested all of these and there is one that just seems right for me. It's also the one that's probably the most different in tone to the rest too.

The biggest difference in the M80 is the fidelity. It's got such a hi-fi sound to it and isn't bogged down by proximity effect bass boost like others you mention above.
And if you don't like it, let me know... I need about 4 of them for my church.

I'd like to hear this on a vocal compared with a 58 and a Sennheiser if you've got them.

My pair has a AMI/TAB transformer this was offed as an option (more money) but thought I read where they quit doing this before Oliver passed I've read a sound on sound review that's says M80 had the AMI transformer standard but now the Telefunken site doesn't mention AMI just says custom wound transformer. Anyone know which is right ? I do know mine have the AMI/TAB

My favorite use so far has been micing a vox style amp (genz benz black pearl). Had a real nice sweet sounding bite.

Interesting. I would say that out of my list, the M80 is one of the top contenders, but it's clearly not the most articulate sounding of the bunch. It's also not the most hi-fi sounding either, but that could be a good/bad thing depending on what you need for the application.

Svart I totally agree with you it is a nice mic but I really like the tight pattern on the mic which really cuts down on bleed ,makes life so much easier and still sonically a contender

The 201 is hypercardioid so that may affect things.
Of the ones on the list that I am familiar with - just looked again and it's the Shures and the Audix awhile ago, the Beyer is definitely not like the others.
Cheers, Geoff

Cheers, Geoff I can say that the hyper/cardioid rating is rather loose. One of the "cardioid" mics I have has somewhat better off-axis rejection than the M201. The M201 also has a very ridiculously nasal sounding off-axis pickup, so if you're using it as a snare mic, the hat bleed is nothing but washy clanking sounds..

A year after this thread ran its course, I'm scheming on an M80 or an M201.
A quick Goog led me back to the only people I really trust on the internet: RGO!
Any observations, thoughts, words of advice, warnings to heed regarding these mics?

Any observations, thoughts, words of advice, warnings to heed regarding these mics? I haven't tried the M80, but I'm getting the best Snare sounds of my career with an M201 right now and the off axis rejection is much lower and better sounding than many mics I've tried on Snare.

You should try it on toms so you can buy more...lol Lol... just what I need. More mics. Actually I used to have about $3000 worth of mics on my toms... then tried the CAD M179's reluctantly after finding them on sale for $105 each. And they sounded better than everything else I had previously tried. The M179's sound so good in toms. Almost doesn't make sense. That freed up some of my nicer mics for other duties. And I don't have to stress if the Tom mics get hit.

The only problem I had with the M201 was that the off-axis bleed had this incredibly nasal quality to it. It may have been less bleed, but the hat chuff was very audible and annoying no matter where I put the mic. I find the rejection on other mics to be much better.
I thought the M179 sounded good, but had a lot of pickup, more like a very wide cardioid, and I had trouble with bleed. I settled with the AT25 on toms.
