all the talk on the SSD thread got me rightfully paranoid about my elderly drives, so i'm going to take some preventive measures in changing things out..., I haven't put a ton of thought into this, but here's what i'm thinking...
I have 4 drive bays in my Nehalem tower, i'm thinking about going 2-250gig SSD drives, one for OS, and the second for PT sessions, once a session is done I can drop it on drive 3, which I plan for a 2 terabyte standard 7200 drive, then i can get time machine to back everything up to drive 4 which will be another 2 terabyte standard drive.
any better ideas are appreciated, I don't want to spend a ton of $ though...
thanx for any help

If you read the linked SSD test, go with the Samsung 850 Pro they got 2.1 petrabytes out of it before it died! that's a lot of data. Get a real backup software, not time machine. there are a few good ones out there, visit the macsales.com site for all the fun stuff. I have been very happy with all the owc gear I have bought over the years.

Synology server. There are tons of models, and the older ones will do what you want way better than a standalone computer. And they will do so, so much more.
Shared folders are accessible via mac file system (AFP), windows (SMB), or NFS. You can also do multiple backups via TimeMachine if you prefer. It's incredibly easy to configure them in RAID as well. Media servers for all your TV's. Easily accessible remotely, etc...

I traded in all of my old ADATS and made one of these, with DIY plans I found on Craigslist.
