This day blows.
R.I.P Merle Haggard. You've brought much pleasure to many from all over the world. Nobody will ever reach the pinnacle you attained during your Capital recording years. Rest well and know your music will be heralded and sung for generations to come.

Merle was my dad's favorite singer. I grew up listening to dad's 45's of Merle. I remember asking you once Randy, before I came down to visit if you could get Hag over there. I meant it, too. If I could have only met one great artist in my life, it would've been him.
He was the BEST.
RIP hero. You and a small handful of others changed this country boys life.

RIP., and thank-you, Merle.
Merle was a big influence on me. When it comes to country music, I'm more Bakersfield than Nashville. Mama Tried is one of the greats.

This from Moose Brown - First, oh my, that man can sing. I'd love to meet him someday. Having loved Dion first, then growing up through the British Invasion, with a side dish of Classic R&B, I came to Country through my dad, who was from Idaho, and listened to Country classics, Hank Snow, Hank Williams, Patti Page, Johnny Cash, some Pat Boone, and so many others, as well as some cool Jazz and Classical. It's funny how my tastes have evolved to something close to my dads now . Mostly Alt. Country, Americana, Folk Rock, Early music, and a pinch of Classical and Jazz. Unfortunately, Merle Haggard wasn't on my radar, though I was of course aware of him. Only much later did I recognize his brilliance, and am sorry for my musician friends who've lost someone that meant so much to them. Losing David bowie was a little like that for me, I was unexpectedly, deeply saddened.

The best piece of writing on Merle Haggard I have seen www.mtv.com/news/2863329/merle-haggard-son-of-bakersfield/This really touched my heart, because I spent many years on the Central Coast of California, close to the Central Valley towns of Visalia, Bakersfield, and Porterville. I spent some time there, mostly driving through on the way to somewhere else, and you could see and feel what Kaleb Horton is talking about, and understand why Merle Haggard had the impact he did - Merle wrote better songs than anybody about that place, that time, and that life.

I have to say - I really revisited Bowie after his death...and man, what a great songwriter and artist he was. It's ashamed that sometimes dying is the only way to make people remember...

That's so true John. You can tell from the impact he had on other's careers. Without "All the Young Dudes, Mott the Hoople might be almost forgotten, producing Transformer for Lou Reed, "Walk on the Wild Side", saving Iggy Pop from self destruction, not to mention the monumental influence he was on other musicians in his prime. Just listen one time with fresh ears to "Life On Mars", follow the chord changes, take in the arrangement, and you know someone with very special gifts was at work.
Just from the beautiful song Mo Pitney played, I can tell Merle Haggard was of the same caliber, just seriously brilliant, a gift to people. I'll have to take a little time to listen to some of his recordings now. An artist of that stature deserves at least that much from his fellow artists.
Is there a classic album of Merle's you guys could recommend ?

Get the Capital Recordings from Merle, Martin John Butler. He was in his prime and so were the people at Capital at that time.
