We just picked up a late 2013 27" iMac. 3.5ghz i7, 32 gigs ram, 3TB fusion drive, 4gig graphics.
It came with a fresh Yosemite install. I can either stay with Yosemite, 'upgrade' to El Capitan or install Mavericks as I have a Mavericks USB boot installer.
We are running Reaper (no Protools).
We currently have Mavericks installed on our old 2008 iMac which is being 'retired' to office duties.
My feeling is to probably run with Yosemite for now on the new iMac.
Open to other suggestions.

I'd read up on what my interface likes best?

I'd read up on what my interface likes best? We're running a Presonus Studio Lightpipe with a pair of modified Alesis HD24XR's recorders in a hybrid setup with an analog console. It's still currently supported up until 'El Capitan' which I already knew. Longevity will depend on continued driver support from Presonus. The Alesis's are a bit quirky as they are not duplex and tracks can only be record armed in pairs which can be a bit awkward when overdubbing on a 20 channel console but the upside is they sound excellent.

I vote for Yosemite. Seems to be the most stable for me so far. I'm also on an iMac, it's the 5k but probably similar performance. I've heard of some issues with El capitan with some 32 bit software having issues.

Yes, definitely Yosemite.
Also if you're running big Kontakt libraries, I suggest you get an external thunderbolt or usb3 flash drive for the samples. Makes a huge difference in sample streaming.
If not, then you most likely didn't need a full 32gb of RAM either, but it won't hurt.

It sounds like either Yosemite or Mavericks is the way to go and as the 'new' iMac already has Yosemite installed I'll probably stick with it. We have a pair of 2TB Lacey FireWire drives that were used with the old iMac. I plan on using them with the new iMac via a Thunderbolt > FireWire cable that I already have although the these drives (along with a NAS in the main house) will be predominately for backups. I recently purchased 'The Hammersmith' virtual piano library that runs in Kontakt player although this was installed on my MacBook Pro rather than the old iMac which was too underspecced to run it along with everything else. The new iMac should be quite capable of running this and I had planned on installing sample libraries on an external USB 3.0 drive. It appears Thunderbolt is probably going to disappear faster than FireWire did so I think USB 3.0 is probably a safer bet for an external drive.

you know you can click on the gear next to the thumbs-up button and delete it yourself, right?

I think the fusion drive issues were solved with Mavericks update, and should be under control now, as there don't seem to be many concrete reports as before. I also thought about mentioning the fusion thing but didn't want to worry him for no reason.
In any case, he can always put his working projects on the external usb3 drive, along with his samples and he should be golden, able to handle most anything, with no RAM, CPU, or HD bottleneck. As a rule, film editors will have SSD project scratch, RAID backup, and new raw footage drives all separate, to help deal with demanding 4K and Resolve projects.

Thanks guys!
Up and running on Yosemite. Much faster than our old 2008 iMac!
Only issue is I've lost the right click functionality of the wireless mouse. It's enabled in mouse preferences but still no go. Was working initially but then ceased functioning.
