If you record a stereo image of an ensemble, spot mic them, and at all try to preserve the image, you can't use LCR.

So everyone records everything either in mono with strict L C R placement in mind, or in stereo with exact placement predetermined by the mic placement? Including a lack of adjustment of MS width? I can and will do MS adjustment when required, but a well recorded song is not entirely like a well planned shoot for a film. If you know the mix/edit, you know where to start. On Tuesday I was recording vocals and I knew I'd want a slightly wider vocal sound for the quiet parts, so I got our singer to double the vocal through a harmonica mic into an amp and I put a stereo delay on that. This meant the vocal had width, but it was also distinctly separate from the dry vocal. Also singing through an amp is fun.
