One cool thing about the Gaga segment, my neighbor's son in law was responsible for the robotic keyboard and mic stand. That was pretty slick.

That's what made me think no one else was willing to try. Geez, I wouldn't get up there and do Bowie. BTW, I'm 27 listens in on Blackstar, and it's still Sgt. Pepper to me. New goodness with every listen.

They were a bit over the top because of the directors choice of shots ( note to Grammy big wigs Big venue limits your shot choices because your more worried about sight lines for the paying customers. Other wise they were very cool and should have been used more !

She does occupy a little bit of the same turf in today's climate (Avant Garde-Ish But Firmly Mainstream Pop Figure). And has a huge following in the LGBT community, like Bowie. I didn't see her thing but if you're going to pick one of the Current Pop Stars TM to do a Bowie tribute, better her than like Taylor Swift or Nickelback or something.

Sorry to be bitchy, I just don' associate LGG artistically with bowie's level at all (and remember I am not a bowie fan boy, but I sure respected him as an artist) and I don't really care who an artist slept with, I care about their artistry; it just seems pretentious and presumptions to me .
What I am really saying badly, is I really respected Bowie for his uniqueness and his courage being the artist he wanted to be and she just seems to be riding on his coattails although I am sure she meant the performance respectfully.
it didn't work for me in the clips I have seen.

The thing is though NARAS helped design the Staples center specifically for it to be used in the broadcast of The Grammys so they've got no one to blame but themselves. Yeah but any decent acoustician would tell them it's still a fucking basketball arena lots of concrete and steel!

Except is was NOT fixed in a matter of seconds. At all. It went on the majority of the song...and came and went--that would've had to fall and only bounce in certain sections...and bounce fairly consistently? Regardless--she handled it far better than I would have.

I would say moreso. I think Lady Gaga's association with the LGBT scene consists of shilling very, very hard and making trite Eurovision sounding music. "Born This Way" sounds like the gay anthems of the 80's, and has a lot of campy theatre around it but it doesn't say anything that might mean a pop station wouldn't play it. So she can charge them a fortune for a fashion show with music and then the bible thumping parent of 6 kids can still leave it on in the car. I think it's cynical, and it's insulting that the best the song offers is to let you fantasize that it's about gay rights. She quit music a few years ago and did a big thing about how the industry was killing her soul. And here she's back again, sucking big meaty corporate dicks for cash. I've little more contempt for a female artist than I do LGG. She's scum.

Regardless--she handled it far better than I would have. The Arogance of not having a back up track to bring up on the fly is amature hour! If for nothing else in case Adel couldn't hear it through her in ears! You don't make Adel choose between taking off her inears and hearing the piano or herself! This entire show and setup which honestly sonically sucked for everybody on the island stage that this is not about the music , but the manufactured spectical of a Grammy moment! Now anybody who mixes FOH or monitors for one offs, Imagine how much fun it's got to be with your act on a stage in front of the main arrays! I'll bet the FOH mix sucked as well. Mixing monitors for a pair that has never played together , your in ears are fighting with the mains and their so far from wedgie world that you have to relie on video for any cues and they are blocking sight lines using overhead and camera cranes! Production designers hated me because in a situation like this I always made sure to explain to those in charge how many things could go wrong in a situation like this and would guarantee something would go wrong on a one off like this! The solution was always if you keep everything on the main stage problems could be solved Quickly and almost unnoticed ( somebody grab that mic put as close to the piano as you can ! I don't care if it's a Wireless 58 ! It's a mic MOVE ! Been there done that) Oh and my wife looked at me during the show and said " I see your want to jump off the coach grab a wireless and sprint to the back of the piano because I have seen you do just that!@

While I'm no Gaga fan musically, I think you've missed a huge point, which isn't contradictory at all....having to choke down the MUSIC business cocks (to stay with your analogy) is not the same thing at ALL as to be blowing inTel and collaborating on some (potentially BS/PR shit with them)---that actually IS artistic freedom. NO one I've known isn't business minded and compromising--if you can figure out a way to make the compromises NOT show up in the music, you've WON. If that means you dress some way you don't like...team up with sponsors who are willing to give you gear and money with no input into the actual creative process--I'm just saying that literally IS the difference in being an amateur and a professional musician, IME.

I agree with your point that there's a distinction, but I would beg to differ about your choice of words to describe these musicians. I would say it's the difference between a professional musician and a true artist. Amateurs don't even get the opportunity to sell out.

Bummed to learn Jimmie Haskell passed on the 4th - wasn't friends with him but he was a friend of a friend and I hung with him a bunch of times listening to great stories about Phil Ramone and Billy Joel, Elton John, etc. If you weren't familiar he did the arrangement on "Bridge Over Troubled Waters" among other things. RIP Yeah, super bummed. What a talented guy. Very old school. I worked with him many, many times and have some great memories. Like when he paid me triple scale for simple stuff on Christmas nite one time for a film date the next morning - had to be done Christmas nite. Or the time I walked into the bathroom @ United Western...or maybe it was Capitol - can't remember - and he was sitting on the can, score paper and pencil in hand, writing the next cue for the orchestra to play during their break. No piano, no DAW, no guitar - just paper and pencil - sitting on the can. LOL. Old school. Super talented and a very unsung "behind the scenes" arranger / composer. RIP Jimmie.....
