You can place all the Apple Loops after the install process on an external drive. Just make sure to drag and drop the folder on the loop browser in logic. With this logic knows the new location of the loops, he wll do a scan process.
For everything else. EXS 24 samples .... leave it on the original HD because it calls for trouble. It did at least every time I did try.
I just bought a bigger main HD ... done.
You should save your projects not on the main hd. If you do scores logic likes the film also on an external hd.
You will be surprised how many sounds and great loops you have for composing now. I know from a serious source that all the strings are vienna samples. I love logic and I never looked back

There are videos on line showing how to set up aliases on your boot drive so can actually download to a secondary drive.

you have to use Terminal and Symbolic Aliases to get it to work. it works fine over here, all of my logic sounds exist on my external raid5 enclosure.

As Charles states, use symlinks if you want to make sure that everything works correctly once an update to the libraries hits the fan. You can use the terminal command: ln -s [Target] [Destination] The target is the where you want your files to reside, IE your external hard drive or such. The destination is the symbolic link file itself. You want to place the symlink file replacing the original folder so make sure you delete the folder or move it to the target first. If you find the terminal too heavy there are small scripts that can help you out: www.macupdate.com/app/mac/41493/symlinker

just to clarify, you have to download them to the local boot drive first before you can move them. there's no way around that.

So if you don't have space you are sunk or you could do them some at a time and transfer ?

I'm prety sure logic will tell you if you don't have enough space to install them. You can choose what to downloadunder the Logic menu via "Download additional content". just don't download everything, then move it, then download the rest after your Symbolic Links are in place.

just to clarify, you have to download them to the local boot drive first before you can move them. there's no way around that. That's not correct. You can create the links before installing Logic Pro X. You will have to create the path if it isn't already there or you can just create a symlink to the whole Logic folder inside the Applications Support folder. This is a list of folders that could be of interest: [/Library/Application Support/Logic /Library/Application Support/GarageBand /Library/Audio/Apple Loops /Library/Audio/Impulse Responses

Most people don't know where that path is tho.. they learn where it is by installing. key word: "most"
