So, maybe 20 years ago I used a set of headphones set atop a road hazard cone as a impromptu stereo mic at a party.. Which led me to try putting a big 15" PA woofer in front of a kick drum for some experiments.
I wasn't terribly thrilled with the nature of the sound, it sure was deep, but no definition at all. At the time I didn't have good mics or multiple preamps either, so combos weren't a reality.
Fast forward about 15 years and I tried it again with some smaller woofers, and found it better but not really anything that I felt I needed.
Then I started reading about the NS-10 woofer trick, and soon Yamaha makes a real one.. I thought it was funny that I had done this on my own, and that others had the same ideas, well before the internet.
Well, I knew that today I'd be recording a big-ass kick drum (26x20), so I decided I'd give the old speaker-turned-subkick thing a try once again.
I couldn't find a decent driver at the electronics stores, so I took one out of a speaker I had here (with full intention on returning it to the speaker) and I'll be damned, it worked so freaking well, that I think I'm just buying another 160$ woofer to replace the one I used.
I'm not sure what changed. Maybe it's just my ears or my technique has changed, but I'm not sure I can live without this now. Two "mics" on kick and I didn't even need EQ or anything.
Oh well, live and learn.

With the right driver it works great , finding that driver is the hard part and what makes a large number hate the concept, it's that whole sample theory thing and the insignicanc of 1!

SUB KICK Something I put together with a small drum and a speaker. XLR and phase switch on top.

Holy cow, I just imagined hooking a kick pedal up to that! A bass drum DI.

Holy cow, I just imagined hooking a kick pedal up to that! A bass drum DI. Might work as an impulse, and perhaps give you a sound similar to the dreaded/maligned/loved 808 kick sound.

SUB KICK Something I put together with a small drum and a speaker. XLR and phase switch on top. I didn't do anything that fancy. I just took an old mic clip and riveted a small piece of pipe inside, then bolted the speaker to the pipe through a screw hole in the speaker rim. It just hangs from a normal mic stand. The XLR is soldered right to the speaker terminals, just pins 2 and 3 connected. It doesn't give much of anything but a glorious low end thump. I parallel with an Audix D6 and it sounds great. Plenty of click and thump now.
