Almost gave in to the GAS and bought a Tascam MS24 with remote for $300 at the local pawn shop, but didn't 1 in 24 and the fact that I have an annex 440-8 saved the day besides I'm saving for my RADAR 24!

If it's the 1" 24 track, it would come with either dbx or Dolby S. The dolby S was more common as Fostex also made a compatible 1" 24 track with Dolby S NR - so tapes were interchangeable... but the dbx sounded better. I had many tape decks over the years. It is the one I kept because it sounded better than any 2" 24 track, but you had to own one and work with it to actually believe that... and be able to compare it to an Otari or Studer 2" - running 15ips, of course. 2" 30ips or 2" 15ips with SR had the edge. But so expensive to maintain!!
I've still kept and maintained my old Tascam MSR24, and it's still running flawlessly 25 years after it came out. Pretty impressive, actually.

Having been a dealer and lived next to the service guys, I know these things were a PITA to repair, and align and that's what kept me from grabbing it, at their best they were close to a poor mx80. The capstan motor was a POS finding parts pretty much means buying used and that means the great unknown! I'll take an otari 2 in over a 1inch tascam or fostex any day! But if he drops the price...

Still got my Otari MTR 90 II and the Otari MTR 10, I bought in 1981. Both have just been rebuilt to Factory specs. Last year I bought a 24 channel Dolby XP rack with cables in a roll around cabinet for $500.00. I use to get 3 rolls of Ampex 2" for $300.00. Now I'm looking at over $1,000 for 3 rolls. I'll be using the Radar V for most of the projects.

I just picked up a Teac 16-85 earlier this year for $400 from the owner of Nady. Took a huge leap of faith on it as there was no tape to test it with but he said if I had any issues I could bring it back for a full refund. Heads looked good so I figured why not. 4 channels ended up being fried but the other 12 sound great. NR was shot so its only useful for certain things but I've already picked up 3 session just for having it around.

The 85 and the other 2 inch were more like Otari's The Enginners at Teac had to show they new what they were doing ! Winetree , the Otari 2in machines were why I bought the Status! The thing to remember about 1 in 24&16 tracks as a lot of guys who bought these were not pros and did very little maitance , so a lot of them are in pretty bad shape. The Owner of the shop called me , he heard I looked at it we might have a deal Just to save the thing from an idiot!

My first setup was a Teac 85-16 with a Sound Workshop Series 30. I had a Lot of trouble punching in because the Tascam didn't have auto input switching. I had to flip a few knobs simultaneously. Otari bought Sound Workshop and after a few generations turned into the Status?

It was a $750 save it from the dumpster purchase! I'll put it in storage till I find it a new home!
