We have a couple of Alesis HD24XR's in the studio running in a hybrid setup with an analog console.
Although we started out recording to the internal hard drives we since use the HD24XR's just for their AD/DA's and record directly into Reaper on an iMac (early 2008, FireWire) via a Presonus Firestudio Lightpipe. (Currently running Mavericks)
The Presonus converts the ADAT to FireWire (32 channels) and has no internal convertors except for monitoring via headphones or a pair of analog outputs.
As Apple have dropped Core Audio support for Firewire in El Capitan we will (eventually) become dependant on Presonus continuing driver support for the FireStudio Lightpipe interface which, itself, has been discontinued for sometime.
So far, so good, but I figure the writing is on the wall so I am beginning to look for an alternative ADAT interface (non FireWire) that will buy us a few more years.
My 2012 MacBook Pro (El Capitan, Thunderbolt, no FireWire) currently works with the Presonus, via a Thunderbolt > FireWire adapter.
I'm thinking a USB 3.0 > ADAT convertor (24 channels minimum) would be the most likely candidate however the ADAT format is also now waning rapidly so I'm not confident that such a device will appear.
I guess at worst we'll end up having to resume recording to the Alesis's internal hard drives if we loose all support for any kind of compatible interfaces.
On the positive side at least we'll be able to record. I have an Echo Audio Layla 24/96 which was a great sounding interface but now has been retired to the scrap heap of 'no longer supported' digital hardware.
(We are planning on a new iMac sometime this year)
