That's some really polished work there. I agree the lead vox is oddly quiet, but I can still hear almost every lyric. No complaints from me sounds like a hundred bucks.

Personally, I like a vocal being "in the mix" versus being so out front that it sounds like it's a singer with background music coming from a blaster over in the corner of the next room.

Great job Dan! Hi-fi for sure! Where a vocal sits seems to me is a personal preference. I personally like it to sit slightly out front just like a live show as I'm visualizing bandmembers on stage, outfront but still attached .

i showed this track to a producer buddy of mine and he said the guitar 'chunks' overwhelm the vocals thru-out the tune. now when I listen to the song, all I can hear is how loud the guitar strumming is compared to everything else lol

But come on, even you have to admit that sonically this is pretty damn good and Tony's point of DIY gear being used supports the idea that the diy gear hangs with commercial products and that Dan not only is a great resource to the diy community but has the engineering chops to back up his posts !

Personally it's an inspiration as this is the sort of goal I'm (slowly) working toward in my own home studio/shop.

Some of the best records have places where lead guitar is "too" loud or vocals are weird or certain drums have no attack or whatever.
Like a grid, it makes things boring to have balance perfect all the time, then there is nothing distinctive or performance-like about the mix, just the usual super loud and bright vocal; kick drum, snare and bass down the middle; room smash; taylor acoustic; yada yada.

I have been meaning to try and get some photos. Until then, here is my lame place holder of a website. www.reverbandecho.com/You can see what I am using as my control room and my gear laid out. You can also see the small format of my Neve. It is about the perfect size. What I am using as my control room is our family room (my wife rules)! It is a nice big space. It is actually on the huge side with a nice vaulted ceiling. Zero treatment in the room but it sounds great. I am in the middle of a few build projects here at our new place and hopefully will be starting a new studio at some point. Money and time are the issue! You can also see my gear list here. Almost everything has been DIY'ed or highly modded. It is a problem I have. Even most of the instruments are built buy me or my friends! www.reverbandecho.com/?page_id=49I will still try and get you some real photos at some point. We have baby # 3 coming sometime this week so I have a few things around the house I need to do first!

I like the gear list and the "CAPI Mod pre". Funny stuff.

From one Dan to another, nice going Dan. I would love to see some close ups of the gear. That list is a spectacular assortment of DIY and normal pro stuff. It will take me a few years to catch up.

Just listened to the song for the first time and read thru the thread. I really like the production, great sound and great song and performance. I did not feel that the lead voice is too far in the background. It is just not the part to feature musically, it transports the lyrics and has a humble, unpretentious attitude that i think work well for the song and the personality of the lead singer in a sympathetic way - like a statement against the modern common overloud and upfront pop singer aesthetics. I really like how the vocal harmonies work. Really great and i understand why these are featured. Yes, the guitar is relatively loud and very present, but i think together with the solid bass it gives the sound a rocking attitude also, which works well and underlines the modern aspect in this kind of music, i guess. Not that this is by any means music i normally hear! But if it sounds really good, it sounds really good. Thumbs up, Dan!
