I've actually been a member of this forum since it first began - I've just never really had a reason to post. My brother and I were at AES at the DW Fearn booth over the weekend displaying our new unit. I've been doing assembly for Doug Fearn for about 6 years. I'm also a recording artist with a small project studio setup that utilizes only DW Fearn preamps, in the form of two VT-24s. Doug's products come from his needs as an engineer, and are built to his strict specifications. We believe they are the best in the business, without exception. They're also extremely expensive. This led us to develop a more accessible line of his products without sacrificing performance. This box is designed with guys like us in mind: independent producers, artists and studios that strive to make the best recordings possible, but don't have unlimited budgets. We've retained the original circuit, but have redesigned aspects of the package to be more economical and efficient to manufacture, and we're selling it in the US directly, as to keep down the end cost for the guys who really need a machine like this. We're currently in the process of building the first batch. They will be ready to ship in January. There's more information at our website: www.hazelriggindustries.com

I love the look .
Its like old school high quality , built like a tank .
I wonder what a whole song recorded through it would sound like .

Thank you for the compliments, Dan and all. Our prototype was built in one of Dan's 2ru cases and is currently making its way around some friends.
Doug Fearn uses the same knobs on his products and we wanted to keep the same aesthetic. - - We're also all pilots and airplane fanatics and that same knob is still used in many Beechcraft and other aircraft.
I wonder what a whole song would sound like, too but I only have two built so far . . . I've done a number of recordings that use only VT preamps. The recordings retain a lot of clarity - but we will EQ at mix down especially to cut low frequencies. With our new unit we EQ tracks when we go to cut them: they basically need no adjustments when it comes time to mix.
After working for Doug Fearn, I've adapted a lot of his ideas (with his mentorship) about how things need to be constructed. Our chassis is just a variation on the Fearn units. We also use many of the same components.
The basic look of the unit is set, though the colors for the paint and silk screen will be slightly different on the real production units. Similar, but not exactly the same. We'll post updated pictures as soon as we can.

It seems like the pricing on this is similar to the pricing to a single channel Fearn unit, but with the benefit of added eq. Is there any thought to designing a single or dual channel preamp only that could come in at a significant discount to a Fearn, or is that not in the cards?

Probably won't happen, at least anytime in the near future. We've decided it doesn't make sense to have products that directly compete with each other. Thanks, Mitch - good to see you again!

Just a quick bump for our preamp. We've got a new website with some information and an all-important 'Buy it Now' button: www.hazelriggindustries.comWe've been shipping units for about a month now and we've gotten some very positive responses. We should have some reviews coming out in the near future too. But we are down to our last 4 units of this batch. The next batch (of 25) will be ready in less than 6 weeks. If you're in the Philly or L.A. areas let me know if you're interested and I'll do what I can to setup a demo for you. Feel free to contact us with any questions that might not be answered on the website. Thanks!
