I got this little guy in this afternoon and it is quite a remarkable compressor. I just wanted to tell everyone here what a great tool it is to track and mix with. I absolutely crushed a mini Cabasa percussion part I was working on at 25 db of gain reduction for you to hear. The attack was fully on release about 3/4 @ 6:1 compression using the manual mode. That pic is when I first inserted audio into it and the knobs weren't set yet. Feel free to download the before and after here: www.hightail.com/download/bXBZNHA4R3NEa1Z2Zk1UQw

I use the Empress pedal compressor in my stage rig. It's by far the best pedal compressor I've ever heard. Three ratios, level in and out, mix control, attack and release. Metering LEDs show level and compression simultaneously.

I use their ParaEQ pedal and it is the best EQ pedal I've heard, by a good margin. The thing is transparent, which is what I want when I'm sculpting what my guitar is sending my amp.
Great quality stuff.

It was for demonstration purposes to push it to the edge that far to show it's capability. I am working on a rootsy track and it has to sit and not move or it will be too much for the track. I backed it off a hair and printed. It lays right where I need it to. I will be running it through the paces in the coming mix days to see what it will do with acoustic instruments. I will report back. As you all know, I am hyper sensitive to over compression and really hate the sound of it (compression in general) on acoustic instruments for the most part.

What amazed me was how it retained the tone of the instrument even though silly levels of compression. That's the sign of a good and useful tool.

Is it that much better then the FC526? Is it $500 better? It looks like it has some useful features and I am intrigued by the description of the auto modes.

It's only $149 more than an FC526, apples to apples pre-built. Shootout......

The tone is better with the Empress engaged. Even crushed, the tone is better.

Hey Randge, any chance you've used the Empress pedal compressor? The Radial EXTC (you have those too right) could allow you in implement them into the studio and a pair of the pedals paired with the Radials would be cheaper than the 500 series. Curious how they would compare.

i haven't used any of their pedals yet. I use the Benado pedals at this time for guitar type effects.

I looked at the pedal vs. the 500 series in conjunction with the Radial EXTC as a less expensive option, the differences appear to be the compression ratios and the 500 series has HP filters and auto modes. The question is whether that's worth the difference in cost and convenience?

The question is whether that's worth the difference in cost and convenience? Better frequency response on the 500 series unit too, according to their published specs. Is the pedal FET? Their site doesn't give much info about the pedal. EXTC would allow different pedals too be used too, which is pretty attractive. Wonder how this guitar pedal would do on a snare for example.

I figured the 16 volt 500 series would sound better but you never know until you plug things in. Sometimes lofi distortion is what you need to parallel a track.
