Just picked up the Apollo 8 blackface on Friday to use as a more mobile recording interface and I have to say I am really impressed with the quality and sound of this box. For comparison my main interface that I've used for the past couple of years is a Metric Halo ULN-8 and I have to say that this Apollo stands up very well. The Console 2.0 is also very intuitive to use and I find it much easier to use than the MIO console. I love being able to monitor or track with plugins with just the click of a button. Since I am new to the UAD stuff, my question for the UAD users out there is are there UAD plugins that you consider must have?

Welcome to the club. I have the same interface and the new BF is a step up from the silver face not huge but you hear it.
As you consider plugs, are you aware of the new registrant special bundle offer that lets you pick any plug for $133 usd in combos of 3, 6 10 and all ? Normally, people use this to buy UA's most expensive plugs as you are saving the most money.
Yes you have to pay but you get UA deepest discount. Many use the money saved to then look at getting the mk ii upgrades to other plugs for 50% off ( neve 73, pultec, la2 and 1176).
One thing, I would suggest not getting any of the Brainwworx plugs on the UA platform as typically BW's sales offer them a lot cheaper than does ua adn every test I have heard about shows the ua and native plug nulilng indicating that the plugs are the same software.

Thanks kcatthedog. I definitely plan on the new registrant bundle deal. Any recommendation on which UAD reverb to go with first?

Don't shoot me: none ! I would buy the exponential audio verbs ( probably a black Friday sale coming) as they are great and to save your uad sharc ships for other processing. But I have most or all of the ua verbs and they are all really good, are you more of a guitarist or an all round producer: singular purpose or varied ? I would think lex or emt 140, but the new akg spring is very special.

Thanks for the feedback. I am primarily a singer/guitarist/songwriter on my own stuff, but I do a good amount of recording and producing for other singer/songwriters for demos. Nevertheless, everything I do in pretty much in the same genres which is country rock, folk, classic rock, blues.

The 1176 collection is fantastic and I would go with the EMT 140 first. It's on everything I do.

yes 140 is very nice. I would suggest a 2 phase approach; use your registration deal for the most expensive plugs you want and check in your UA folder anything called legacy has a mkii update, the legacy shoud be included in the classic bundle you got with your apollo so this lets you buy teh mk ii upgrade at 50% off like the 1176 soyour call but you can save more n other pugs with your registration deal and then use the saved money to buy mkii upgrade to get your best overall lowest price. Hope that makes sense. Also, wait as you 45 days from registration to purchase your plug deal and UA has a new OS coming with new plugs which you should be able to include. personally I really like 1176, la2a, pultec and varimu compressor and ampex but use your ears when you demo and see what works for you. remember all your demos reset for 14 days when you buy any one plug so you can trigger multiple successive resets if you buy at different points in time

The EMT 140 is as good as a plate plug can get, and you get three different plates with EQ adjustments. It's one of my top three must haves. The Ampex ATR-102 lives on my 2 bus, everything goes through it, and it really sounds great, with the 30ips preset and the Smooth Vocal presets being almost all you ever need for mixing. Last, I'd get the LA2 collection. The 1176's are indeed really good, but I've run out of DSP power often and used Waves versions like the CLA 1176, and they work just about as well for me, so the LA2A is indispensible, but the 1176's aren't, to me anyway.
So: ATR-102, LA2A, EMT-140, in that order. I've had them for a long, long time now, so you know a plug is really good if you're still sing them for three years!
Good luck.

Just looked at the ATR-102, LA2A, and EMT-140 and I think those would meet my needs very well.

See - I just don't think any other 1176 gets close to the UAD 1176's. Take a snare and go 12:1 and crank the input. Listen to the difference in the saturation. I feel like the Klanghelm MUJC can do what the la2's do for $35.

I used the $100 voucher UAD provided and got the 1176 collection and agree it is really good.

I use the Ampex a lot too. Really only use the student to dirty things up. I occasionally use the fatso sr. on drum bus. It's cool. The Fairchild is interesting - you can get a nice roomy, smacky drumbus. 1073 is really good on snare. Love the Space Echo and the new AKG bx20 is the bomb.

Just looked at the ATR-102, LA2A, and EMT-140 and I think those would meet my needs very well. That's exactly where I would start too + the 1176. I haven't really branched out into their more esoteric plugin set yet. Best to cover the essentials first, which UA does a really good job at!

I would buy the experiential audio verbs ( probably a black Friday sale coming) as they are great Just to clarify, are you referring to exponential audio's soft verbs? Just want to make sure because I'm holding out for a seasonal sale too, but would hate to miss the next big thing if this experiential outfit is something I'm not yet aware of... ;-)

YOu might have more luck posing your question at the UA forum ? I actualy think someone posted there recetnly who swithced from MH to a new BF apollo. uadforum.com/forum.php

kcat, he said in the opening post he had a Metric Halo as well and it compares well. I just want to hear MORE about that. Maybe even a direct comparison with audio files
