General question from a choir director friend of mine.
He's looking for 3 to 4 good microphones for mic'ing up his singers in live settings. They would be mounted on stands and positioned for groups or 3 to 5 singers.
I'm thinking wide cardioid... but what to get in handhelds? Any recommendations? It's a loud boisterous gospel choir BTW.

I've always seen SDCs spaced out over choirs, every 4-6 people or so. When you get to that distance and still want good definition, my guess is that you'd want a lightweight diaphragm to pick up detail.
I'd say that handhelds need to be hypercarioid to limit the amount of phase problems between the super-close mics and the choir mics. The telefunken M8x type mics come to mind as being pretty well liked mics for singers.

Good handhelds are designed for rejection, so really your looking for 2 different animals ! For wide cards schoeps MBHO and MBHO I mean Audix Scx1s.

I used to record the county chamber choir for all their shows back when I was just getting into this. The lady was a bitch, very particular about how it sounded and all. I ended up using a pair of Oktava MK012s with an ultra clean preamp like a forsell. Usually I'd just put one on each outside isle and point them between the middle and end of the middle row of singers. Cardoid worked best and allowed just enough room in. BTW, if there is going to be an audience you need to elevate those mics up and angle them down a bit to make sure you don't get a bunch of people moving papers and chewing on mints.

The other thing try some omnis you will find how little rejection you really have off the back and see how much easier things are with linearity off axis!

Miktek PM-5's. You can even screw off the ball and have the exposed mic for recording distances. They are pretty similar to their C-5.

I have had good success with my Lewitt's (240's or 540's)for these type of application.
