Anyone familiar with this? Seems that there is a group buy going on to mod your Apex 460 to the JJ Audio Dutch 251. BradM is mentioned as having a pair. Any thoughts from Brad or anyone else?

Jim has been selling his set of pre-modded replacement PCBs for the 460 as a DIY kit on eBay for some time...he and Langston have done well offering these kind of promotions in the Pensado Students FB page, and this looks like another nice promotion...Jim does good work!

I second that. Jim modded my VLA and I liked it so much, I had him mod my TLA 2051 channel strips. Huge improvement, IMO. Plus, I picked then up in person and got to hang out with him for a bit. Super nice guy, very knowledgeable.

Just from the looks and sound clips of these things, they seem to be the real deal. I definitely like the use of custom and esoteric parts.

I talked to Jim exactly one time in my life.... for an hour and a half on the phone! It was a few years ago, I was interested in getting one of his mics, but i made clear I was equally interested in getting into the whole DIY thing, he selflessly, and generously gave me a ton of info and inspiration to get started building my own stuff, what a cool dude.... I hate him! thanx a lot Jim, you're directly responsible for my major addiction!!!
I kidd of course, Jim knows what he's doing, and is a helluva nice guy!

I was very interested in JJ Audio mics before I got into DiY. Much respect for Jim Yes JJ, and Brian Fox, along with various others were a big inspiration for me to crack open some Apex 460s too. Turns out it's one of the best things you can do. I've seen a bunch of pictures and sound samples over the years on gearslutz threads and some also from the JJ Audio website I think. I am not a fan of a certain person they use for marketing on the purple site, it's like Michael Joly all over again. I really, really don't like it when people go around spamming discussions with their sales pushes. Other than that JJ Audio seems pretty legit. Especially if you're not the DIY type to do this sort of thing yourself. What I really like about Jim Jacobson's work is his high-end attitude. Some of the other mic-dudes out there are cutting costs, but Jim seems to go "All the way" with his paper in oil caps, great capsules, vintages tubes, fancy wiring, etc, etc. To me that's really what you want out of a mic like this. Not just something that's cheaper than a vintage Neumann but something that will also sound in the same bracket of "good" as any mic in the world. Which I honestly think is possible with the right parts, tuning, and attention to detail. So yeah, my own mics are probably pretty similar to something he would make. But I got some really helpful tech advice from Brian Fox also that I'd be washed up without knowing about, so he gets major props from me too.

I just saw that I was mentioned in their marketing. Interesting. I honestly don't recall raving about the mics online, but I'm sure I've mentioned I am happy with them in the past somewhere. Unlike what they claim I don't have a 251 style mic. I have a C12 style mic. I sent Jim a pair of ACM-1200's I bought years ago as part of that big Chinese group buy. I also provided them with AMI T14 transformers, Microphone Parts RK12 capsules, and NOS GE 5-star 6072a tubes. I may have provided some additional parts as well since initially I was intending to do the mods myself. I never ordered a "Dutch" specifically, but simply told Langston I wanted a C12 clone and sent him everything I had. Jim was just figuring out how to do the single layer headbasket at the time, but I opted to not do it because I wanted to avoid the extra spit that would end up accumulating on the capsule over time. The mics that came back were powder coated a cream color. Jim completely rebuilt the power supplies as well. From memory I recall there being extra/better filter caps inside. I ditched the original mic cables in favor of some Gotham tube mic cable. Overally I've been really happy with the mics. They sound great and do exactly what I want them to do. I use them for drum overheads mainly and vocals occasionally. The have a big bottom end and open/bright top end, but not in a zingy kind of way. For drums they do a great job minimizing the midrange honkiness in my room, while making cymbals detailed, and toms huge sounding. Build quality is excellent. I've thought about downsizing my mic locker a little bit. This pair of mics is definitely not going anywhere. It's a major winner in the "bang for buck" department. My only complaint is that the badge on the mic is plastic and is coming unglued. Brad

What you have is as much a "Dutch," as anybody else could get from us, save for we use primarily an Apex 460 as the donor microphone, but in your case the ACM1200 sufficed since its pretty much the same microphone. A full plate follower circuit was installed, the biasing for the C12 circuit, along with a rebuilt PSU. Our group buy microphone uses a new powder coat finish in a beige green, that has that retro 251 look to my eye. Pretty rad to be honest. Glad you still dig the mics, I will correct my claims of you owning a modded "251," pair and revise that to a pair of modded C12. PS I can send you a new badge if yours is coming off. Thanks

Thanks Hi Langston! Thanks for the clarification. Cool. The new color looks great by the way. Yep, I most certainly do still dig them. A new badge would be awesome. Just shoot me an email and we can go from there. Congrats on your new Zulu product by the way! I know how much hard work goes into developing a new product. I wish you guys much success! thanks! Brad

I've had my Dutch pair for about 4 years now. I'm finally selling them in the classifieds. I'm upgrading and have to let them go sadly.
They have a beautiful fullness and sweetness to the sound. I used them for drum OH's and room and lots of vocals. And just about everything else. I'm seriously bummed to let them go, but I'm getting a pair of 67's and I can't keep both. I know I will miss them. I'm never comfortable selling stuff I like.
