Is it just me, or does anyone else find 763 different versions of the software corn-fusing? They seem to be following microsoft's lead and IMO producing WAAAAY too many variations. I'm just a composer/singer/songwriter. I don't have all day to track all their updates (pun intended). I just wanna make music.
IMO, you offer 2-3 versions, PERIOD! But they've got their "rolling updates" and I just saw some freaking thing called Ipswich version (hth does that compare to the other 73 versions?) etc etc etc...
I think they've gotten away from their core competency and I do believe they will totally fracture their market, which is already happening because I don't want to wade through all the hype to figure out why I should bother to upgrade. Maybe it's time to look more seriously at Reaper...

Actually, there is 3 versions of Sonar, just like it was before, with Platinum beeing the equivalent to X3 Professional. They release an update every month. You get one year of continuous updates from the time buying or upgrading. Nothing vastly different than before, but you get more features earlier i.e. the time they are ready. Plus bug fixes of course. To distinguish the update status, each update gets a name, last month it was Ipswitch. That's it. Although i haven't upgraded to Platinum yet, its feature set is impressive right now, and it still is a very good bang for the buck for everyone in need of a complete package of effects plugins from some well known dsp developer teams, plus a complete set of VIs, some of them have really very good quality, e.g. Addictive Drums, but also their own Dimension and some stripped down but still impressive versions from third party developers. Add the prices of what you get in Sonar Platinum in detail and you will not find a comparably attractive offer from other DAW developers...IMO.
Yes, they changed to an in-between model of "1x update a year" and "abonnement/rent", where you get updated features when they are ready without waiting a year and own the software when the one year of updates is due. A fair and transparent model.
I wasn't too thrilled either when i read about it. But the price/performance ratio is very good and the feature set impressive.

The basic edition is $99 for an audio engine that doesn't artificially limit track count. I use 3rd party plugs (fabfilter) but have been tempted to go for one of the bundles...

Well I overall like it. But as I said, to me, the marketing has gotten the best of them and it seems very confusing. You have to spend a fair amount of time figuring it all out.
And as stated, some of their plugs are rather poor; left a bad taste in my mouth.
I guess that's the price we pay for the new software model of renting vs. owning; so many companies are going towards that now.
Thanks for your thoughts.

I guess that's the price we pay for the new software model of renting vs. owning; so many companies are going towards that now. It'll be like that because people went for it without giving forethought of the future. Immediate satisfaction will lead to holding an empty bag of "the cloud" someday. Probably nice for a developer and for the ones who like to rent, but ultimately bad for those who want to have possession of the wares. Once people see the cost invested for a piece of something, it'll be to late too turn back the tide. I don't like that Kool-Aid, personally...

Yeah good points b1. I just read recently that there's a hotel that has a robot bellhop.
A ROBOT bellhop!
Ok, cool you say, you don't have to tip it and it won't drop your luggage? It can carry a lot?
I say, there's 2-3 bellhops out of a job! That one robot can probably work 24/7 without a brea or complaint (ok I'm sure there's maintenance downtime but...you get the idea...)
I for one am not very happy with the direction all of society is going with all the automation.
It won't stop at bellhops. Then it'll be the checkin people, perhaps eventually the maids, etc.
What will "regular folk" do when their jobs are taken over by legal mechanical immigrants?
And THAT is why I don't like the new Sonar. (kidding!)

I always stick with the traditional lanes and try to save some jobs.
