Just think of them like big areola's and they start to look quite nice !
I'm getting more and more interested in this. Maybe I'll see them at AES and take a closer look.

One can always pay to buy the Knob style they prefer to twist and Turn. The Athestic and tactile sence of ones knob preference is very personal!
We are talking Gear right ?
I mean knobs seam like something we would talk about on some place With Sluts in the name ? am I right?

I picked one of these up recently. Totally satisfied. I know it's expensive but if there was ever a piece of gear that earn the right to be, I guess it's this one. It sets an eq curve that is absolutely perfect for my vocal. Carves out a low end signal to perfection, thumpy and present without being the least bit boomy. Massages a track like fader rides (which can't be heard). Worth every penny. And this is not hype. Absolutely no regrets about this purchase. None. It's a better maker.

Cowboy, if you were in a room and had your pick, but could only have one to use for a year for vocals, the Chandler RS124 or the Retro Sta-Level, which one would you take home?

Wow, that's saying something because I know you have experience with the Sta.
Second question, on a final mix or mastering session, you have either two Sta's or 2 Chandler's, is it still the Chandler?
This is really interesting, because they're in the price range. Often the choice is made by the price.

Well, I wouldn't say it's that cut and dry...one isn't "better" than the other. Here are my opinions on both:
Color 124 - more emphasis in the middle-mids...the 400-900hz range...not saying it's mid forward, it just seems to have a focus there. Color might be a little more noticeable than the Sta Sta - more emphasis on bottom end...
Attack 124 - slower attack possibilities. I would say the 7:00 to noon attack settings are most comparable to the Sta attack settings Sta - attack is a little faster less variables and options
Gain reduction characteristics 124 - very smooth GR - knee seems to be little faster than the sta making it a little less transparent. You can hear the "grab" in some instances - but that's the draw for some. This thing can handle -20 and still sound fantastic. Sta - seems to have a slower knee therefore a little more transparent in the gain reduction. You can hit -20 and not know you're doing it.
Overall The 124 is extremely flexible. It's the best sounding comp I've ever heard on bass. Absolute lock down. Lock down might be a great description for this comp...You can absolutely lock anything down with this. It's not transparent - it's colored and gooey...i.e.Maybe not first call for vocals on a modern pop production (of course there are no rules)...but this is a color piece with amazing flexibility. Put on the Beatles' White Album and you can hear what this thing is doing. Enhances the already rich mids of the U48s...It also performs really well on acoustic instruments. Seems to handle the transients really well - doesn't freak out, but somehow lets the transients through while still being able to compress. All in all an amazingly flexible, rich, colored piece that would get use everywhere.
The Sta is amazingly transparent in its gain reduction. It adds a noticeably bigger low end and maybe a little tube sheen on top. Less flexible than the 124...but will probably leave less of a sonic imprint on the track while doing its job of gain reduction. Whether you like that more or less is entirely subjective. But - to me - those are the differences.

The 124 handles low mids much better which is why I like it better. I'm a baritone. It's like it does the Pultec boost/cut trick without the Pultec. The sta is more gooey.
But about the buss question, I'd have to go with neither lol. I much prefer solid state comps for their punch on a buss. My preference anyway.
