Just sold my Sta-Level to fund the RS124 purchase. That speaks volumes!

BTW - certainly not a condemnation of the Sta-Level...I just wanted to go the RS124 route for a while...Knowing me, I'll add another Sta-Level when I can swing it...

Cleaner...and it can be much faster. Similar transparent gain reduction. Both excellent pieces, I just think the RS124 is going to be a little more versatile.

I tend toward cleaner myself. How much does it cost?

Hey John, have you tried Retro's Powerstrip? I only know its stereo Pultec EQ, which is shared with the Powerstrip, but for what I've been told, the compressor on the Powerstrip is based on EMI' 124, and sporting as well a tube preamp that people also rave about, it might be an alternative to both Chandler pieces at half price? Though yeah I know how GAS works, once one is fixed on some piece of gear.

Welcome, Henry_Berg! Yeah - I had one for about a month. It's a great piece. The comp on it only has programed attack releases - and only like 5 of them. I find Pultec's don't really work for me unless I'm using them on a stereo bus - which obviously require two. Just not a super versatile EQ - more of a sweetener. I didn't see the production model of the RS124, but I believe it will have TONS of options...not sure they want the specifics out yet, but think of having the exact RS124 Abbey Road plugs in one box. Plus - it's the exact circuit as the original. Not a clone.

Is it just me, or do those giant chicken head knobs look like theme park refugees? I wasn't aware of a chicken head so large, guessing they are custom, and that's a silly choice to me. They look REALLY out of scale. Hopefully everyone else will just LOVE them. I hope it sounds great!

It does sound great. The original EMI knobs were chickenhead styled much like that. I think they were trying to stay with the same vein as the original and keep this unit under $3,000. There are added knob settings, however, to change it (attack/release) with a hold in every position so that it is like the five different versions of the RS-124's that they used as their references. I thought that was a great idea to step it up a notch from just being another clone out there. I certainly would like a pair!

I think if they went to the trouble of making a custom knob, they should have made THE knob, which looks little like a Chicken Head, more like a General Radio knob. Chicken Head is the most generic knob there could possibly be, and a huge out of scale one is comical to me. Like I need clown shoes to qualify. Hinson was putting standard chicken heads on his Altec conversions, which were clone enough to fool most. This one looks a lot like a General Radio knob, the other one that comes up less in an image search is more of a bar shaped knob like a Pultec. static.kvraudio.com/i/b/rs124-2.jpgA piddling cosmetic complaint about a device I'll probably never buy or drive....carry on...

Since you guys have plenty of experience with the LA2A, and the Sta-Level, your opinions are important to me. I'm really looking forward to your assessment and comparison, once you've used it for a while.

I actually like the chicken head knob. I was able to get a hold of it and turn it with authority! With the hold functions, if is more versatile than most compressors can be. I am into smooth, warm, transparent compression and then very colorful compression on drums and perc when I want it. I was able to do both quite easily and was very impressed that hitting a fiddle and vocal as hard as I was hitting them, it was smooth and nearly invisible. It's a grade A comp for sure and one of the very finest in recent manufacturing.

I know, I kid, I kid.
Those knobs remind me of something you'd see in a documentary about Edison and Tesla, kinda cool if you look at it from a old power station vibe. The knobs EmRR posted do look classy though. I'd be happy with either one.
