you can build your own. sound skulptor has the STS stereo tape simulator. Yeah ive got it already. It works but i don't like the lack of control. I only use it on sources well above the low bump like hihats. It sounds great on hihat.

What kinds of controls is it lacking? I was thinking of getting one some day.

all it has is input output. anamod has bias control. the problem i have with the ss is having to eq in/out of it because the low end bump is so dramatic. just strapping it across the bus usually makes it worse. you have to mix into it to make it usable. quick example: in EDM it is basically mandatory to tune your kicks to the key of the song. having a boost at 75hz when youre trying to tune it to A-55hz is counter productive.
i want to be able to pass each individual track through it straight to print and not have to fine tune each one. plus some serious tape fanboys have converted to ats-1. im hoping to get a more defined 3d image more than hearing any kind of saturation.
i think when i get it. if its ok with wiz. i will pass his files on "show us your mix skill" thread through it so ppl can hear the difference on files theyre already familiar with.

Owned myself an M 15 A for about 5 years. It wont be night and day.... in my opinion there are too many tape expectations around the WWW. If you think its the magic tool, why not using a good simulation? You will fast stop batch processing files with the hw, it takes time and you cant recall anything. www.soundonsound.com/sos/sep12/articles/slate-vtm.htm

I am a tape fan and own a fully loaded Anamod ATS-1. As much as I want to sell it and invest in some Vanguard VTSAX, I just can't bring myself to get rid of it. It's the best emulation I've heard yet, hardware or plugin. Justin Weis and I did a shoot out on GS a few years ago and posted sound clips. We both felt the Anamod was the next best thing if real tape wasn't an option.
I think the box is super good. I use it for every project that involves a computer. I would call it indispensable. When I can figure out how to design my own tape emulator box, then I might consider selling it. Until then, I track almost everything through it.

I think Anamod do a good job. I thought the 660 sounded really good.
How much are real tape machines these days?

I think they're discontinued though. I know I tried to buy the atr card a while back and they told me they stopped making them. Had to talk a guy into selling me his. I won't say it's a must have. People are making better records than me everyday without it but I'm glad I have it and I never really think about selling it.

I'm 100% happy with my Handsome Audio Zulu. It's passive, analog and does a beautiful thing to digital audio.

Every time I pull up anything I tracked on my buddy's MM1200 (with a 16-track headstack) it just makes me smile.

Yeah, I guess the only way to snag a 351 card is to find one on its own (next to impossible) or buy a used ATS-1 with the 351 installed. I'm hoping that the Zulu can reproduce that sound somehow
