There are probably workable solutions somewhere in the site, but I was wondering what
folks use to tame mic overload on a low SPL mic.
I've got a Shure SM57 type mic that is very usable except for the occasional distortion.
It's not clipping per se, it just a sort of distortion during dynamic parts. I've heard of
a simple non-powered convertor box which people have made, but I'm uncertain of the
installed components... just wondering what others use to deter this overload problem.

Here you go it is a very clean amplifier for your dynamic mic. My guesswork is you push too much gain into your mic pre, because the dynamics have a low output, and with this it distorts. This little baby gives you +20 db extra gain but absolutely clean and fresh. Yes sir, it surely does help.
Yes, the gain is higher than should be but recording @ -7 dB. This should do the trick!
3 models to cover the bases.
