The listeners are bored because most pop country tunes are formulaic to a fault. You have similar singers singing in the same keys, using what constitutes as mostly the same structure song to song...in some cases the same tempo's over and over. Most top 40 country is unfortunately cookie-cutter musically and tonally. You pair that up with the same boring lyrics about Rednecks and 'Merica track to track...it's a blur of uninspired and mostly insipid songwriting in general. That is not to say there isn't fantastic authentic country music, or the occasional modern song that really does have soul...but it's a genre I can barely listen to if I'm honest with myself...guitar solo's aren't going to save you from being bored and unchallenged to begin with. The problem, as usual, is an unwillingness on the business side to broaden the horizons of genres legitimately...and taking a hacksaw to what is "allowed" in a top 40 production will only serve to further homogenize things. Pop, Hip-Hop, and Dance Music are all essentially variants of EDM currently...because all these productions do is play it safe. I know a lot of folks aspire to break into top 40 country or work on those kinds of productions, but playing ball with the suits over and over will eventually dilute the genre you love in much the same way until it's unrecognizably similar to all other top 40 genres. Spot on! Thank God there's still Rock.

How do you know when the drum riser is level? So, it's the end of the night and the show's over... and the bouncer looks over to the bandstand and sees two of the bandmembers in a vicious brawl. He springs to action and heads to the stage to break it up! "guys, what's going on here? You just finished your show, why are you fighting?" The drummer answered "This douche just threw my sticks across the room!" The bass player quickly retorted "Yeah, well he turned down one of my strings and he won't tell me which one!" (ba dum pish)

The guitar god is dead? No wonder since so many haven't learned to play the thing. Everytime I see a music video, the guitar player looks like he's sawing his guitar in half strumming so hard. At least I have my Hendrix and Cream collection. Someone must have forgot to tell Brad Paisely the guitar god is dead. Either that or he didn't listen. Still rocking that Tele last I checked!!

Not really a new thing unfortunately. A few years back there was a DJ on a formerly "classic rock" radio station in the DC area who used to do those edits himself, BADLY. I remember hearing his "improved" version of "Don't Fear (the Reaper)" with the guitar solo removed. Nauseating. Ironically this was the same DJ who introduced Little Feat on the " Waiting for Columbus" album, I never bothered to find out if he managed to chop up that annoying segway between "Dixie Chicken" and "Tripe Face Boogie"
No guitar solo? Bring on the Accordion Solo!!!

Bring on the Accordion Solo!!! Jayson, as a matter of fact, the Columbia single (45rpm) release of "Reaper" had the solo edited out. BOC later made an appearance on Merv Griffin's show and we were lip-syncing the record. Unbeknownst to us, they used the single version and it totally messed up the band (mainly me) for the lip sync. It was comical. The highlight of that day was meeting Burt Bacharach in the green room.

I loved the line about cutting SOS so they could fit more songs in per hour, We all know they ment Ads! This Guys is why 99% of my radio listening is the Local AAA public radio station and NPR! The last Comercial station I really listened to Tried AAA but went back to Light rock, I miss WMMN in Madison, that was a great commercial station.

Now?
Guitar solos have been dead for decades. Thanks, amatuer hour grunge-a-thon. Only thing less hip in modern times than an accomplished guitar player is a sax solo in a pop tune or tenor male vocalist.

Well, I'm a gonna keep playing my guitar, and I'm going to make whatever noises with my guitar I feel needs to be made to support the tune. That just might mean an occasional solo. Or it might not. My decision.

Commercial radio has driven many people to Sirius/XM. I don't think terrestrial radio can hold a candle to Sirius/XM. I realistically couldn't see going back to listening to 40 minutes of commercials for every hour of programming. Besides, you're just not going to find anybody offering the depth of the playlists you find there. Programming services haven't ruined it...yet. There's certainly no shortage of guitar solos on Deep Tracks, Classic Vinyl or the Grateful Dead channel. Plus I get to hear a lot of old friends and clients from my live sound days on Jam_On.
