The listeners are bored because most pop country tunes are formulaic to a fault. You have similar singers singing in the same keys, using what constitutes as mostly the same structure song to song...in some cases the same tempo's over and over. Most top 40 country is unfortunately cookie-cutter musically and tonally. You pair that up with the same boring lyrics about Rednecks and 'Merica track to track...it's a blur of uninspired and mostly insipid songwriting in general. That is not to say there isn't fantastic authentic country music, or the occasional modern song that really does have soul...but it's a genre I can barely listen to if I'm honest with myself...guitar solo's aren't going to save you from being bored and unchallenged to begin with. The problem, as usual, is an unwillingness on the business side to broaden the horizons of genres legitimately...and taking a hacksaw to what is "allowed" in a top 40 production will only serve to further homogenize things. Pop, Hip-Hop, and Dance Music are all essentially variants of EDM currently...because all these productions do is play it safe. I know a lot of folks aspire to break into top 40 country or work on those kinds of productions, but playing ball with the suits over and over will eventually dilute the genre you love in much the same way until it's unrecognizably similar to all other top 40 genres.

Or to put it in a slightly different context, once someone figures out how to make money at something it eventually becomes a racket.
Back to the topic, being a guitar player I think the issue today is the formula that gets radio play is that the song has to be around 3 minutes in duration and we are told it's always about the vocal and lyric. To me it's always been and always will be about the composition, arrangement, musicianship and production. Formulas should apply to mathematics and science not music.

The guitar god is dead? No wonder since so many haven't learned to play the thing. Everytime I see a music video, the guitar player looks like he's sawing his guitar in half strumming so hard.
At least I have my Hendrix and Cream collection.

There are some incredible players here where I am at but it seemed to me everyone was just chasing what was popular at the time . It's especially held true to the guys that said "we're trying to do something new" after asking what type of music they were doing. Now, everyonce in a while someone would come to me and it would blow my mind!

I think they should take a hacksaw to the genre based format. As a kid I could hear "Play That Funky Music White Boy" followed by "One of These Nights" followed by "Communication Breakdown" followed by a Motown songs. So, you were forced to broaden your horizons. It was a good thing compared to today, where people socially, politically, musically and in other ways balkanized.

From the comments in bannedchuck's original post article:
brujahdon • a day ago Cutting guitar solos is NOT gonna save their shitty songs....how about writing some decent material?? Music has become so "cookie cutter" that they cant even see the problem right in front of their face. Every song sounds the same, every artist sounds the same... But I can tell you who the guitar player is, just by hearing their playing style.

The biggest problem in music (and design and popular culture in general) is this desire to create and design things that "look cool" but serve no functional purpose. It leaves you with silly restaurants that all look alike, cars, houses, clothes, and songs that are all mundane.
Music made simply for the sake of getting on TV (or famous) is of the same value and import as reality TV and shows like Housewives of Atlanta.
A song written with a purpose and point of view, won't leave you feeling that a part is missing.

I'm going to write instrumentals with vocal solos. BASS SOLO! BASS SOLO! BASS SOLO! Ha, I'm actually working on a song right now that will have a 12 bar bass solo, so there you go. It also has a 36-bar guitar solo, so fuckit.
