downloaded yesterday, great tone, great playing! What I'm taking away from this is...these comps are FAST and CLEAN. Do you know which op amp configuration this was?

I believe he used the All1731 and the All Red Dot versions...Randy was thinking they were pairs with the different opamps, but there were actually 4 different modules each with different opamps. But no biggie - kind of shows you there's not THAT big of a difference in the opamps. They're all good.

That is cause someone put the Retro OP-6 on top of the console tape saying what they were! So, all of the left channels were the 1731's and the right ones were the Red dots. Maybe Jeff can verify that for us.

Awesome. Pretty sure I'll be going for two all-1731.

I actually really love the first pass! Brings out the richness in the tone so well.

It was red lighting the 10 but not the 20 button on the reduction meter. I can just hear it get sluggish with that kind of extreme compression. The 2nd pass is where I would probably use it.

Outstanding playing and recorded sound! P2 does it for me, but maybe P1 would work in parallel.
I'll take two please, 1731 flavor. Need someone to serve them to me fully cooked though.

sounds really versatile Randge the thing doesn't eat up those transients on any setting i heard, can you get it to chop off the leading edge at all? it seems you'd want to be able to do that in some cases when placing back a bit in a mix, what were the op amps in there? did you try the ic style op am in the attack section?(i'm assuming the gain reduction stage of course), just curios? thanx for doing this, great player!

Sounds good. I'll join the crowd and pick P2 as the favorite. Nice song choice too, not was I was expecting to hear.

Attachment DeletedGary "Biscut" Davis is a 4 time Winfield banjo champ and works at every major show in Pigeon Forge it seems. He and I were on tour with Dolly together and he also produced her "Halos And Horns" record we did a few years ago. He is a monster player. This is the setting I used for pass 2. As you can see, there is alot more attack to be had and lots of flexibility there. R

Attachment DeletedThis was the setting that was hitting nearly -20 compression. Notice the first is at 2:1 and this one is 8:1. R

Now, he plays with a band up here that comes through my venue on the regular. Nice player.

I can't remember what all got recorded as we were moving pretty fast. Jeff was needing to leave about the time players were sneaking in. Damn late musicians! Lol! R

I still play and sing on her records when she needs me.

The CAPI coloration is obvious in these examples. I can hear these working nicely in certain situations with mandolin, guitar, and Dobro in combination with a fast clean preamp.

I like the P2 on its own also, but I guess it would depend on where it sits in the context of the mix

Most bluegrass guys are like me in that if they hear a compressor changing their tone, they are frowning at the engineer. After all, some of their instruments cost more than the cars and homes they live in combined. They care very much about their tone and a compressor is a tone wrecker to them.
