Do tell I keep looking at the EQ as an alternative to the GR Harrison!

Honestly, I didn't get much time with it...basically didn't get to use the EQ at all. I thought the pre was really nice and hefty - sounds like a 1073. Very nice singing through it. Maybe we should have a major 1073 shootout. Put this shit to rest once and for all.

Man, I have just been swamped lately. Finishing up two different projects, writing, holidays, etc. I thought I was gonna attack this song I was telling you about, but I tracked the acoustic and was just like, "this ain't happening..." For a myriad of reasons - long story, but the song is just bad, i didn't really have a direction for it, so I bailed. I just told my dudes that they would need to demo it themselves. Once I get something I feel like I can tackle, I might want to borrow a pair of those pres again.

Also interested in the RTZ 9762 500 series Pre. So Randge have you compared them to other Neve clones? Thoughts?

I have. I own some of the other Neve types like the Great River MP-2NV that all have their defining merits. The RTZ's hang with all of them and to my ear, they sound a bit better. The GR is a fantastic neutral preamp that works on just about everything under the sun and the RTZ's are like that. Lots of development time (years) went into making the 9762 and 9762a's, to get them right. I was amazed at how he nailed the rack version to the 500 series version and made them so you can't tell them apart. Both versions have a much better top end than any Neve I have used. He found a way to remove the cloudy veil that Neve's tend to have. Sparkle without being harsh or brassy is a good way to describe them. I rarely have to eq much and choose to spend time mic placing until the instrument sounds captured correctly. They are truly ideal for what I do here. To date, they are my favorite preamps. Next come my Telefunken V-72's, Great Rivers, Forssell's, McCurdy AU-300's and the Edwards Audio LE-10's all fall into mainstay use and tend to stay on certain instruments when tracking. Since I mostly track everyone live on the floor, I am glad to have some options and enough to go around that I can switch out if something isn't hitting me quite right. I can say that from a personal taste driven opinion, that there are no better preamps on the market today. Different colors, but none better made.

Thanks Randy. They do look gooooood. Have a Heritage 1073 thats great. But these look badass. If the Aussie Dollar was stronger i might have passed the Heritage on for now and give these a try. But thats not the case. Aus $$$ is shiiiiit. Will def look into. RTZ in the future

I didn't get much time with this when I borrowed them from Randy...but when we shot out a bunch of pres a while back, I thought the RTZ might be the best in the bunch.

The RTZ's have a little more to offer in the highmids than Heritage, which is probably why I like the RTZ sound so much.

Why are these things so under the radar?? Only discussions I can really find on them are from like 2006.

Here is the thing, if you don't get the right dealer, distributor, press agent, general generic loudmouth to preach about the Devine powers of your gear you can slip below the radar. That said and I have no idea if this is the case with RTZ, some manufacturers try very hard to avoid the Hyoe Machine and the demands it places on them. Some veterans realize that there is this inevitable bubble and when it bursts it sucks to have to let people who have become a part of your life go.

He is the epitome of boutique gear manufacturer. He has had limited ad space and relies on word of mouth for advertising. He has grown his company slow and steady without getting into massive debt like many other companies have. Give one a try and I imagine that you will be a fan for life. That is what has happened to me.

That is what has happened to me. R At Least once a month I find myself telling a potential gear manufacturer, "Don't go in debt & if you do don't use a credit card"! The thing is if you stay loyal to a few select dealers they will be loyal as well! Imagine if your a one man show and trying to keep in touch and remind all the guys at Sweetwater and VK you exist ! The big boys have reps that call on the Big dealers ( not GC) every 1-2 weeks!

Cowboy did you end up grabbing the RTZ pre?? Damn right. Bought a pair and couldn't be happier. High definition audio. Just makes everything sound good. They are pricey but worth it. I like Randy, am a fan.

In love with the RTZs. Easily the best of the best to my old ears. I guess the RTZ is considered in the Neve family but they are more hi def than Neves. Got this nice little accentuating thing going on in the high mids. Makes recording easy. Engage the HPF and boom, done if you place the mic right. The Heritage has more weight and heft, also a nice thing sometimes. Get both and live happily ever after!

Leaning towards maybe letting it go and grabbing the RTZ. can always grab another Heritage later. Rack is full now so it will have to be one or the other.
Thanks Again.

Any update on the PEQ-1549 ?
I'm pretty sold on the RTZ 9762A and looking for an EQ module to complement them. I was thinking either the PEQ-1549 or a 1073-style EQ. Or even an Electrodyne 511. From what I've heard the PEQ-1549 sounds fantastic but might be better suited to mixing than tracking.
