Anyone used them? Are they a poor approximation to the AEA and Royer stuff?

Anyone used them? Are they a poor approximation to the AEA and Royer stuff? I've heard after mods they're on par with that stuff. I have my eyes on a modded victor.

they are nice, but the lundahl upgrade puts them into another league.
I had the vinjet for a while and still have a pair of jrr panther ribbons that I upgrade the transformers in ( cinemag).
The fathead is a short ribbon, the Vinjet and Panther's are long

Good mics. Closer to the aea an coles in tone than a royer. I think they still fall a tiny bit short, but you get 75% off the tone for like 10% of the cost.
That being said.. when i got the royer, i gave away the shiny box and the apex ribbons, and sold my first gen fathead..

Well, you know what they say about professional recording.. The last 20% of the budget makes 80% of the sound..

...I love the Victor and Vin-Jet long ribbon mics...the Lundahl upgrade is definately worth the extra $s, but even better is sending the stock version Victor (new $169, or less pre-owned) to Mark Fouxman at Samar Audio...his mods are world-class and very reasonable (his toroidal transformers are legendary)... ...the guy who owns Cascade (Michael Chiriac) offers some great deals on B-stock items on eBay (I've bought a couple of mics at very substantial discount)...you can check his offerings periodically here (if you see an item you like use "Make Offer" option): www.ebay.com/sch/mich-chir/m.html?item=161433435050

Fatheads are a bargain, cream of the crop of the Made in China Ribbons. The Achilles heal of these is tension and ribbon material, even the stock transformers ain't bad not great but not great. I would never talk somebody out of them, I would say I prefer a Beyer 260, Sank Modded 260 , Any AEA or Royer. But those Fatheads are fast becoming the SM57 of Ribbons for a very good reason.

Yeah but I'd miss The BBQ here in KC! Besides I love My loft, walking distance to all kinds of great food and great Music Venues, last week we walked to the Sprint center with the Kid, when we went to see Sir Paul we , stopped for Drinks and still beat our Neighbor who drove home!

And Murfreesboro is the new Raqqa***...sigh en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Islamic_Center_of_Murfreesboro*** - I do not oppose those that do not want to behead me, however it is getting harder to distinguish between the two considering the silence coming from the American Muslim population.

Just finished a drum session in NYC. The engineer used a stock fathead for front of kit about 8 feet away--kick sounded natural, focused, and real.

I've got a Lundahl Fathead. I like it on guitar cabs. Lots of body, takes EQ really well like a ribbon should. It's also great on drums. I pair it with a cheap MXL R40 and get very real, natural sounding room/kit mics that I can then mangle to taste.

I'm using the very cheap and good MXL R-40. I upgraded the transformer myself. Even cheaper than the fatheads, they go on sale at Musician's Friend sometimes.
I think Cascade is probably better if you don't want to go in it yourself, they come set up well I think, and with the transformer upgrade options and cases. You pay a little more but you get a better mic out of the box probably. I want to try the VinJet.

Love that thing on vocals, acoustic guitar and any kind of bright percussion. I'm sure a pair would be cool on drums.
