I've got a 2247SE and mostly use a Vintech X73i or API 3124+ preamp with it. This mic sound greats to me on baritones, but on tenors it sounds so clean and peaky on some frequencies-with no warmth- that I don't use it.
Is there anybody here with experience with this mic that might choose to comment? Would the LE tube help? I have a U87ai which I use for tenors and it sounds better with a more even response. I can keep the 2247 for baritones, but I thought it would have a wider ranging vocal application.
Thanks for anybody who chooses to comment.

I don't have one, but I can say that if you don't have enough warmth with a 3124, you probably aren't going to get any more with another preamp, unless it's an old germanium preamp.. Those have tons of bottom end.
It may just be a case of "the sound is not for you"..

The sound is good for me for baritones, where there's some wool, but not tenors. I've been using it with an LA-2A. Perhaps some other compressor will give it some wool for tenors. It's like when you get into the midrange, it gets very clean. Edit: I know the Peluso isn't supposed to be a 47 clone-though they put 47 in the name- and perhaps its tape saturation that keeps Nat warm when he gets to his higher notes. But this kind of evenness in tone is beautiful from Nat-who apparently used the U47.

Something you might try.. Put a pad(6-10db?) on the output of the preamp so you are forced to add more gain. It might help thicken it up with a little output transformer distortion.

Frank , First off I'm not a Peluso fan, now that we have that out of the way, This really goes to what I hate about doing mic demos for people who are not just recording them selves. Finding that one mic that just fits all voices can be next to impossible these days. The thing about the Vintage Classics is they weren't voiced to be awesome on a type of voice they were voiced to be musical on just about everything. Unless your dealing with a builder who understands you want that all purpose mic you have a couple of voices with you for demo. Also It's about building a collection of tools, I mean it always surprises people that the. Vocals on Thriller and Rumors were pretty much all Dynamics !

Yes, but a U47 with an M7 or a K47?

Interesting thought that vintage mics were meant to be musical on just about everyhting. I've got all the clones-U47/C12/U87 plus dynamics. No fets yet. Someday.... Though I didn't have as extensive a mic collection back then, when I recorded Gretchen Wilson on the song I wrote back when she was a demo singer she chose an SM58.

I am the happy owner of a 2247 SE. I found it a bit bright at first, too. I would highly recommend to replace the tube with an NOS RCA "red meanie" 6SJ7 tube...the red one, basically. And also replace the two electrolytic caps inside the mic with Vishay BC Blues. Both the stock tube, and the Xicon caps, don't help with brightness in my experience. I have done these mods to my own mic and I love it even more now. It's one of my favorite microphones, and the most perfect for my voice of anything I've ever tried.
If you have to sell it, I've heard it said that the Pearlman mics are perhaps more warm sounding, in the same price range. Never tried one myself.
