I've replaced with the soundfiles with the FINAL MOD...This is just unbelievable. I swear it's the same mic... CV4 STOCK - snd.sc/19L9oMbCV4 MOD - snd.sc/1cegz0lEDIT - some of the following posts might not make a whole bunch of sense because I added the FINAL MOD sound files after this thread had been going for a while. Really, the only thing you need to hear are the two sound files above, in this post. They tell you everything you need to know about Shannon's mod...

First off wanna say thanx to Alison T. And John Kenn for their time and support. Also wanted to take time for those of you who don't know John and his skill set, he is absolutely stellar what he does. I'm sure we've all been around, And seen or heard of people they know that can record. Just like that infamous Nashville Tale. My cousin that works down at CoGo's his uncles kid on his side of the family their oldest son is dating that Becky, you know i mean Becky what's her name her dad owns a studio. They recorded a song there once. It got played on the radio you know the type that had cassette and a cd. Well He has all this recording gear and when those microphones they sold for a limited time at Kmart.
That isn't him. I've seen very few people that quick, efficient and yes can hear as well. I know that there are a few out there but that's just a very few thank you John. I do hope everybody enjoys it like a say it's easy to gossip, it's a better man to pass on good things. The goal was to remove that aka "zing" and did, but it's in out genetic code to push the envelope, and make something good better.

Modded mic sounds like a different and much better mic to me.

More body to the tone and less "zing". Sounds good.

what would really sell me on the mod would be if the modded examples were 3x as loud as the stock ones lol
The CV4 kinda sounds like it was designed with John K as the primary test subject during the design phase, cuz it sounds freakin' great on the male vox in stock form.
I'm not a fan of either incarnation on the female vox.
Can you do some examples of it on other instruments, like acoustic guitars? as a drum mono room mic? maybe on horns or on a stringed instrument like a cello? Folks who buy the CV4 buy it as their single do-everything mic, usually, cuz they can't afford a mic locker but want a great all-arounder.

BTW - I didn't worry about level matching...I did it by ear - so be it...In fact, in a lot of cases, I think the stock might be a little louder. The stock mic sounds really good to me straight out of the box. It's bright enough that it sounds EQ'd already...which is great on lower dynamic passages. But when I really lay into it, man, it gets harsh. It pinches with more volume. There are certainly ways around that - great mic technique, multiband compression, a hi pass filter, etc...I did it for several years and had great results with it. The Mod has a frequency spectrum that stays consistent no matter the dynamic range. No pinching. To me, it has more mid-range information and a better quality of mid-range information. Boost 2kHz with the Mod and it's useful. Boost 2kHz with the Stock and it will cut glass and remove nipple hair. Here are my suggestions - 1) Go buy a Miktek CV4 - it's a great mic and a great value 2) Go buy the Mod - it takes it to another level. That combo will cost you $2200 and you have a mic that - to me - sounds like a much, much more expensive mic. A Blackspade UM25C - with a Tim Campbell capsule will cost you $2700 A Wunder CM67 will cost you $3900 A Wunder CM7-GTS will cost you $3900 A Bock 241 will cost you $4000 All of these are great mics. You can't go wrong with any of them. The only difference is you will have much less money.

Chunger should chime in and explain how much his C12 clone costs with the Tim Campbell capsule lol. Tho, i think TonyCamp built one!
I have a CV4 :-) they're surprisingly sturdy. I've dropped mine several times lol

Just based on the samples, I found this to be the case as well. The stock mic sounds great, but the passages where it's pushed, it gets harsh. It seems like the mod does better in high SPL situations.

I'm not sure if this is a statement or a question, but the Chunger C12 w/ TC capsule is about $900 from my past calculations. It's my next DiY build. I'm expecting Tim's capsule to be ready for me any day now. John, these were all different takes right? You didn't have a CV4 and a modded CV4 at the same time, did you? I only listened to the Male Vox, but the mod indeed sounded good (as did the stock, tbh)

I'm probably the only person who uses this mic on sax. here's what it sounds like on that currently: www.youtube.com/user/mulletchuck/videos The mouthpiece review videos are probably the driest sounding of all of them, if you wanna hear the mic without any effects. I list the signal chain in the video descriptions. I think it would be helpful if everyone posted their signal chain (including converters) for these sound bites.

Looks like a $15,000 251. That was kind of the target for this mod.

yes that is a 251 and cost you atleast 15,000 and up for that quality. Jeff Stieger has a beautiful 251 ! I didnt copy it but went with the traits of one and did sound closer than i thought in the end we kept his files, Jeff heard it before it was complete. two different capsules.
