Hello Everyone  First post, but steady follower of this forum. Im looking to buy a second pre, and am looking for a good addition to my GAP 73jr. My interfaces are linked RME Fireface & Metric Halo 2882 (2D). Mics: SM7B, 421, SM58, GAP R1 Ribbon, 3U Warbler. I am recording Vocals, Acoustic, Electric, E-Bass and small Percussionstuff. I was thinking about Warm TB12, Heritage 73, V676b Telefunken. What are your ideas on this? Thanks, Max |

Since you already have a Neve pre, why not CAPI? Actually, I'm still a bit hesitant to go 500 at home I do a lot of work in a pro studio over here (in Berlin), i got CAPI there (also API), BAE etc. But Im looking for a very stripped down, fast and fun setup at home - where I actually did and still do most of my writing/producing. Even if I get just a ... lets say 4 modules lunchbox, the empty slots will keep my mind busy...till they gone Its tempting, though |

Honestly, it looks like you already have a bunch of really good workhorse type of stuff. If it were me, I would keep the money and save for one really nice standout mic or HW piece. There are some great mic pres around $500, but probably nothing that will be wildly better than the GAP, which is already good enough.
If you HAVE to buy something, I think going with a second GAP to have a stereo pair would be a smart move.

For just a little more you can get an AEA TRP. That is a legitimately good preamp that can stand up next to anything.

I didn't see any tubes in your current list and if you can get a Telefunken for under $500 then maybe you better do it quickly.  (edit - ok that's a solid state model...) But seriously a nice tube pre can be cool sometimes but $500 might not cover it (even used). Although if you look around and are patient, you might find something in that range or for a little bit more. or go the opposite direction and get something squeaky clean? |

Just a note, I think having two matching preamps for stereo is unnecessary in most cases.
The Daking is nice, but kinda (don't stone me) similar to API character. The Heritage 73 is nice but it's no BAE.
Honestly, from your list, the Warm TB12 would be my choice. It's cheap, because the brand isn't popular on the forums, but it's a nice clone and there's 4 different tones in there (2 opamps / 2 transformers). I don't own one, but I've played with one and I thought it was great.
However, I would also consider spending that money in other stuff instead, like a microphone.
I see no SDCs in your collection! May I suggest the Soyuz 013 FET (used, around $500)? I'm sure it'll bring more joy than a preamp.

First, I haven't used/heard the Metric Halo preamps, so can't really compare, but I'd also give a hard look at the AEA TRP, or other well-engineered/regarded clean preamp. I recently got a tube mic, and the AEA preamp is neutral enough to really hear that mic whereas the BAE 1073/API and tube pres I've put it through veil its detail a little more than I personally like for my own recording. Your GAP ribbon and top shelf dynamics will sound very different through a really nice clean preamp like the TRP, and ESPECIALLY on things like percussion and the other sources you mentioned where clarity can be desirable.
I'm sure the MH preamps are good, too, but if you have patience/interest, I'd suggest at least getting the nicest outboard clean pre you can afford (with a no questions return policy) and comparing. I love my BAE, but since my main condenser is already colored and I tend towards ribbons on drums/guitar amps/vocals sometimes, I'd personally be lost without the TRP. Lately, my BAE 1073 has been nothing more than a bass di (and a very good one). I thought my Apollo's mic inputs would be good general purpose "clean utility" preamps, and they're not bad, but there's not denying the outboard "clean utility" pres I've used sound better.
If you do decide you want color, I'd definitely cast a vote for any of the Dakings. I have only CAPI and other vintage-y API clones lately, but I remember the Daking Mic Pre One to be quite a bit more neutral than those. I did have a 512 awhile back and it was definitely more neutral than the vintage/312 clones that I had at the same time, too. Again, I really liked the Daking and kind of wish I'd kept it. I remember it as a quintessential "neutral but not clinical/boring" sound...it sounded 'Classy' which I know sounds a little silly, but I really remember it that way. Someday, I'll try out some John Hardy's, which a lot of engineers I've known over the years swear by for "neutral but not clinical/boring."
The only other color pre I remember really loving that sells for a lot less than it should used IMO these days is the Great River MP1-NV - Great River's take on the 1073, but "dehazed"...it was built specifically to channel the girth of the 1073, but without quite as much build up in the mids. As I understood it, when that pre came out, that sort of mid build up was a common criticism that engineers made when tracking projects entirely through 1073s.

I could get a used UA 710 over here for 500 bucks. Never worked with this though...tube AND trans. In what case you would use / prefer a tube preamp instead other preamps? |

Also planning to get a M930 and AEA ribbon in time. I can grab a used Warm TB12 for 350 bucks over here, I think i will just try it - would be a cheap way out. |
