I've worked on JBL LSR series (LSR32 and/or 6328p) for the last 10+ years, along with a pair of NS10s. I used to find the '10s incredibly useful for dialing in a mix, but I find myself nailing most mixes without ever switching to the white cones these days.
Folks who had NS10s and ditched them - do you still have a smaller reference monitor? what did you switch to?
for the record, i tried some amphion one15s and the one song i mixed on them was a disaster.

Audix Niles. Loved those, but they blew up too easily. Then JBL LSR 25P briefly before moving up to the JBL LSR28P. Used those for years and years. Those translated VERY well for me. Then JBL 708P which is where I am today.

Then JBL 708P which is where I am today. I plan on keeping my LSR6328Ps (love them!) until i eventually make the switch to 705s or 708s. are you just on the 708s or do you have a second reference? I use my ns10s so little these days that i'm wondering if i even need a second pair of monitors. |

he Kali Audio IN-5 3 way. Active, same basic size, easy on the ears, translates really well. Not expensive.

I’m using NHT Super Ones. They don’t sound like NS10’s but why’re useful in a similar way. They’re very affordable

From what I'm reading right now after googling, it's sealed (no port), not that much bass, and good focus and detail in the midrange. thx for this recommendation! |

I sold my NS10s in about an hour shortly after they were discontinued and I've never missed them. I like even smaller and even crappier "test" speakers. I had little Rat Shack models until one fried, then I got a bigger set of Rat Shacks. When I got new monitors last year, I needed the amp that was running both sets of speakers to become the bass amp of my tri-amped system, so I'm not using the little guys anymore.
I'll occasionally put the speaker in the Studer A80 2-Track to work. I'm off axis when I use that, which is also a good idea for testing.

Sold my Minimus 7's to Dave Martin, around 25 years ago. They were pretty Realistic.  Are Sony 7506's the NS-10's of headphones? I have the Fraternal Twin V6's. Mellower (supposedly) due to "group internal soldering" vs. the 7506. Discontinued recently-of course. RIP RE16/EV 767a/most Blue mics/etc. Such is the Lore of Yore. I've added other stuff but have kept them as one never knows when you might "need" them. It's also good when you need a "special" comparison.

Sold both
Bought K&H 0300's and 1970's Auratone 5c's
0300's failed and got essentially thrown away (I'm still thanking Sennheiser - thank you so much you ........)
Bought ATC 25's (kept the Auratones as they look so iconic :-)

Are Sony 7506's the NS-10's of headphones? I do like both 7506's and NS10s so you might be on to something here. |

Formerly Fostex 6301 and KRK 6000. Now KRK V6S4. I can get stuff done on the JBL LSR 305 mk II and KRK Rokit 5G4 too. Fostex reissued the 6301 a while ago. Sennheiser HD 25 are invaluable too.
I’ve had other monitor adventures but these are what worked for me. I used to be a big HS8 fan but being able to swap them in and out in the same position versus the Rokit 5G4s revealed the HS8 had much less detail. The Rokit 5G4 are bad at revealing vocal recording issues though. The cheap Kevlar tweeter doesn’t have enough detail vs the acidic Asian button domes.

Also the Yamaha MSP7 was a beast from Akira Nakamura, the same designer as NS10, but it was discontinued before I could buy a pair. It was much more detailed than the hohum modern rap and electronic producer special that is the hs8. All of the used MSP pairs I’ve seen had blown tweeters so avoid. Their owners and resellers are trying to offload broken junk.

Ever since I tried a pair of powered galaxy hotspots (PA6BT), my NS10 sit unconnected.

I went to Yamaha NS-4’s. Still pop on the 10’s every now and again. I find them incredibly useful and still switch to them immediately when editing. Probably a leftover from when I had to edit pretty much all day and night as an assistant and needed a break from the engineers blasting my ears with the mains all day/night.
I’d turn the 10’s on until I could barely hear what was happening and edit like that.

When NS10’s were d/c’ed the most common replacement were he Mackie’s, JBL’s , Yamaha powered monitors, Genelec 1030 and 1031 and the ProAc Studio speakers.

I really like them. I first learned about NHT’s from reading about Joe Barresi and Sylvia Massey liking them. I think they used the A20’s. The SuperOnes are very useful speakers. They’re not voiced at all like NS10’s. They’re flatter sounding. And there’s not much bass but that’s a good thing because there is no false information there from woofers that are over hyped. Hook them up with a good amp and you can get slot done with them. |

They’re very affordable NHT built a reputation as a great value in the consumer world, if my memory servers me it was started by a couple of guys who had worked for Acustic Research when they were part of Teledyne. They had worked under Kevin Vick’s designer of the Mirage M1 and designed all the original very expensive Revel Speakers for Harmon. The NHT concept of small speakers with a dedicated outboard amp was brilliant. Putting a heat producing device next to a speaker that develops power compression, increases distortion, and is responsible for most driver failures just seams stupid. Unfortunately the market, especially freelancers loved the convenience of built in amps, regardless of heat issues. |
