I understand these have gathered a bit of a cult following amongst synth players for their ability in sculpting synth sources.
Designed by Don Davis for Altec Lansing in the 1960’s.
Altec used some of the best custom inductors available for a sweet color tone, made with molybdenum permalloy powder toroidal cores as found in Pultecs and Langevin 251-A’s. This heavy duty EQ is one of the coolest I've seen or owned and gives the warm sound that only a passive equalizer (like a Pultec or Langevin) can give.
Single channel 24 band inductor based passive EQ made up of 24 discrete 9013 ’T’ filter EQ modules. Each module is a 1 dB per step 600 ohm bridged ’T’ attenuator with a tuned inductor capacitor network.
Standard 1/3rd Octave frequencies from 60 Hz to 12K5 Hz, with a 14dB max cut. In the off position of any module it is simply a hard-wire bypass, so only the frequencies you need ever come into play to effect the sound. Loss only occurs at the frequency in question. If you can tolerate a bit of loss, you can set all frequencies at -3 dB (one example) for a 3dB system loss from 60-12K5, and turn some frequencies ‘up’, since, being passive, it’s cut only. With shallow cuts, the curves are broad, some like them in that range for gentle mastering EQ. They become sharper the deeper they go.
As described in Altec Technical Letter #192 (“Filter and EQ loading” - available online), “response curves are virtually unaffected by source and load impedance”, so no special considerations to be taken.
Connection via screw terminals, the unit can be used in a balanced or unbalanced system. Pigtail it with XLR’s, TRS, or wire directly to a patch bay.
