So, I have about 50 mics, which is low by many standards around here. :-) I'm seriously thinking about getting a pair of LDC mics for piano and drum overheads. Here is where I'm at:
SDCs - I'm all set there with pairs of each: MK012, MC930, custom made KM84-ish
LDC mics I have:
(2) AT4050 (currently my goto on overheads
(1) AT4060
(2) Miktek CV4 with K47 capsules
(1) Wunder CM7GS/M7
(1) Beesneez B67-269 v2
(1) ADK Cremona
(2) ADK A51 - pretty low end quality
(2) Oktava MK319 (mod)
(1) Nady 1050 I'm still modding with various capsules to find a use
So I was thinking of these options:
1) Get a second B67-269 so I have a pair
2) Get a second ADK Cremona for a pair of brighter mics (cheapest option)
3) Get a pair of BC12A FETS (heard they are kind of bright like the OC818)
4) Get a pair of B87i v2 (or some other U87 clone) The BU87 got really good reviews. I could also look at Carlos' 87 as well
The pair would most likely live on piano 90% of the time but could go over to drum overheads. In a way, I'd rather them be FET instead of tube. Why? Dealing with power supplies and tubes. FETs are easier to just throw on something and I wouldn't have to think about tube replacements. I'm not really getting these for vocals. I think I have that covered, except for a C12 clone I may make.
I don't want to go over $1600 on the pair.
What's your thoughts?

On that list, I think I'd go for the BC12A fets, or the second B67.
Not on your list, I think sE T2s sound great on piano. They are titanium capsules and handle transients quite well.

I’m loving a pair of Cremona on OH. I used to use 414b-ULS and I like these as well or better. I think the Cremona will probably shine on piano as well, but haven’t tracked mine with them yet.

Oh boy, if I was going to expand on what you have the Beesneez, if I were thinking LDC FET Ben’s 87 clone, but if it were me I would turn in one of 2 directions first I would consider some SDC’s your budget isn’t going to swing B&K Schoeps or KM84, but you could swing Beyer, used Earthworks, MBHO or probably Sony C535/6’s. Sennheiser MKH if you take your time looking but jump Quik when you see something. Since I have a bunch of Sony’s if I were in your position and had the itch let’s go Medium Diaphragm and find a pair of Beyer MCE834 or 740’s, maybe the Neumann medium Diaphragms if your really patient.
New I also look at Sony C100 and C80.

Get another Beesneez 67. I wish I had 4!
What about Serrano 87s? I have a pair and wouldn’t hesitate to use them on anything!
The FET C12A is also cool but def bright. I want to get a second for overheads. The tube was cool but I don’t think i like it on OH. A friend lent me a pair for a couple weeks.
Also the stam tube 87 is no slouch. I like it a lot on guitar amps and after my shootout last week, def would consider a second to use for overheads

Piano? The Neumann type LDCs can be very colored on pianos, acoustic guitars, and guitar cabinets. Maybe Shure KSM44? Sacrilege I know.
Drum overheads depend a lot on the drummer ime. I could tell you one that is detailed and undamped yet it would sound like the harshest thing in the whole world on one drummer yet a more pleasant mic for them might not capture the performance of another drummer. The Beyerdynamic LDCs were very great and inoffensive yet are discontinued. Beyerdynamic keeps raising their prices past the detail captured and durability of their mics though. |

Just adding that I used my 4050s on overhead for a good while but I quickly sold them all once my mic locker improved and grew. They just sound a bit thin to me. They are a decent workhorse mic but I would pick a Serrano 87 any day over them. Or even a Soundelux/Bock U195

It seems like you should try what you’ve got on piano and see which mics compliment the specific instrument(s) you’ve got. If that’s 90% of the use, that seems the most direct way to get to the best choice.

A matched pair of new AKG 414xls are incredibly useful utility microphones. Our of all 131 microphones, my favorites on all types of accordions. The player can ever stand and they follow it around the room. Equally savage on banjo. Moderately ok on piano, especially uprights . . . not quite the bees' knees on my C7 though. |

You must be sick.... :-) Actually, I'm pretty much fine with the AT4050 pair on overheads, though a little more girth would be nice. U67 o U87 would do that. On piano, lately, I've use the MC930 pair. It's sounded so good that I really have no reason other than GAS to change it up. The MC930 are quite nuetral with a 10K lift (slightly). They are really great on so many things. I've tried the CM7 on piano and it was only OK. Maybe too much midrange, which would then exclude the U87 pair from the running. So many choices. |

My vote is for the BC12A fets - considering a pair myself. I had a brass capsule 414eb a long time ago and really regret selling it. If these are anywhere near the same ballpark then they're very much worth the price.

I have mics and channels and patch field assignments all over the place for tons of different applications. I have strong preferences/opinions on what I like and dislike... and downright flick to the bin as well. I gave some mics away, much like drbill because they were getting no love from me. The C7 doesn't work with either Beyer MC930s (matched pair) or Neumann-Gefell M930s (also matched pair). Weirdly enough |
