What did you buy on a whim/get as part of a bundle/forgot you had that surprised you with its usefulness and/or how often you actually use it?
Mine is El Clapo by Boz Digital Labs. I think I got it on sale for like $10 and it is literally my most used virtual instrument. I’ve always had a hard time getting claps to sound how I want them and these just kill it for me. Moreover, it rules for beefing up existing claps also. Def did. Of expect to use this thing as often as I do.

Soundtoys Echoboy Jr. Never expected it to sound THAT good. The slap back tape setting on the UAD ATR-140 kills everything else trying to get that vibe.

My favorite surprise plug was Blockfish but that was years ago. Can’t even recall how I stumble upon it. At the time it felt nothing brought me closer to how I was mixing in the analog world (sending multiple parts to an 1176 or two in parallel was a big part of it).
The last time a plug made a that kind of significant change (which I bought blind because I liked the company), was the Fuse Audio channel strip. I’d never used strips much but this kind of changed the way I mix ITB – same strip on all channels for the basic stuff, then use whatever preferred EQ or comp on top of that as needed. I find it faster and feels a bit closer to working on a console than before.
In both cases they changed the workflow more than anything.

Pulsar 1178 became my go to comp for everything. Wasn’t expecting that.

The free CLA Echosphere. I use it more than the library of reverbs I paid for!

D16 Frontier Limiter. It's always good when I need it. I went away from it for a while because I was/am dumb. I'm back. Still dumb but using Frontier again.
...and the Arturia Tape MELLO-Fi. Damn that thing does something cool.

I bought the Sound Toys library and had no idea how often I'd turn to the Crystalizer for creating interesting sounds from existing tracks. It's become a bit addictive. The bad thing is if the sound makes too big of an impact on the song, then the group is struggling to recreate this effect in live performance. Sometimes we've figured out how to recreate it with delay and pitch pedals, but I often struggle to get exactly what is going on.

All of the Arturia plugins, synths and FX alike. I love them way more than I thought I would — in fact, the synths have become my go-tos. Pigments is an amazing alternative to something like Nexus, Sylenth, or Massive.
Waves CLA Bass. A friend showed this to me years ago and I’ve been addicted ever since. No idea how they managed to make this thing sound so friggin’ awesome.
Waves Abbey Road Vinyl. Was NOT expecting this one to sound as good as it does, totally threw me off guard. I was expecting something pretty “obvious,” ala iZotope Vinyl, but this one can be much more subtle and refined. Sounds gorgeous on the stereo bus.
Native Instruments Transient Master. By far the best sounding transient designer I’ve tried.
