After years (decades) of running PT, I recently ran into a problem that was stopping me dead in my tracks. Literally. The only way I could solve it was to trash preferences, restart, reset preferences, etc.. A PITA - but it got things going again. But today, I decided to get to the bottom of it. Although I normally work on my own sessions as of late, I had to jump back and forth to a clients sessions at a higher sample rate. Randomly, pro tools just wouldn't go into play. After searching Youtube and listening to all the "usual" reasons which pretty much any PT user would know, I ran across this bug fix that Josh seawell found, documented and put up for dummies like me : No more needing to trash preferences to get things working. THANKS JOSH!!!! I learned something today! Woohooo!! Much appreciated!! Hope you have a great day!

I've always exited Pro Tools and reopened it when that happened. This is MUCH faster. Thanks!!!

We used to have this problem all the time at the studio when we had the old hd setup. It used to drive us crazy - I made a call to one of the assistants at Avatar and he clued me into this same trick. Works every time!!!
Wish they would fix whatever bug that is

Is this the “switch the buffer size trick” to get PT HDX to do something as simple as PLAY? I can’t believe this is a thing in 2022. It drives me crazy that with as much $ i have invested in this system I have to resort to tricks like this to get it to even function. Can’t they fix this long-standing bug??

Is this the “switch the buffer size trick” to get PT HDX to do something as simple as PLAY?? Yes. When pressing play or hitting spacebar, it goes into "play" and then stops before playing.

Yup, I've definitely had that happen...with clients staring over my shoulder like "don't you know what you're doing?"...fun. Found the solution on the interweb, and it was probably Josh's video now that I think about it.
Funny enough, Cubase does the same thing on my home system, except that it "plays" but no sound comes out. The solution is the exact same too...maybe Mac OS has a bug that causes the system to loose the audio driver?

This also works if your hit play and your audio is cracking and garbled all of a sudden. Had it happen on Motu and Apollo converters. Just do same procedure.

Pro Tools was an interesting experience back in the day, it appears not that much has changed since I used it a decade ago.

That might actually prove my point…I would assume (or at least hope) that Logic has “perfect” compatibility with Mac OS. But who knows

I've never heard garbled audio or crackling. It just won't go into play.

I've never heard garbled audio or crackling. It just won't go into play. I have that bug too, the flashing, not-playing play button. The current version of PT had been the best I’ve had yet. It’s mostly quite stable, but I’ve had these two bugs (to varying degrees) for at least 10 years, across lots of versions.

drbill I'm so glad it worked for you! In between doing reviews and shootout videos, I try to find solutions for the many ways Pro Tools has annoyed me over the years 😂 RGO is the best and I really appreciate everyone's kind words, you guys made my day! 👊🏼

Damn this bug is still there! I think it might be driver or in/out protocol (CoreAudio and ASIO) related though because Reaper has a similar bug where you have to change the sample rate and then change it back even if you check the box for "project sample rate"

I had that exact issue last week and of course it was a f... me! moment as its never happened before. Did a restart and that cured it for me but thanks Josh , this sounds like a good'un for many of us.
Cheers, Ross

Not worth the time there.

Other was fine. yeah that's not helpful for classical stuff haha real time means an hour long bounce just for a quick mp3 mix for the artist to listen to before we do full post work to approve their performance.
